Fuel sending unit ground question

I installed a blazer tank from the military surplus store. After that, it is way too hard to get my sending unit to ground and I'm sick of it grounding then hitting a bump or something and the gauge pegging out. So..could I take my sending unit out, drill a hole in the top and run a wire from the sending unit to the frame? I can get it to ground great by holding it against the frame, but it is really picky with the lock ring. I cleaned everything up but it doesn't seem good enough?

Is there any kind of hazard in grounding it to the frame? I'm just a little scared since there's 30 gallons of gas right there...haha
