Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier ?

I just bought a swind away spare tire carrier and noticed it was the same as the one in the piture from Vince Y (hope you don't mind I stole your pic Vince). I have all of the parts but wanted to ask if anyone knows if they reproduce the gas/water can bottom bracket and top strap or if they interchange with other early to mid 70's models. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Scott

I have one that just catches the lip of the Jerry can and a strap up top.It could be fabbed up.I doubt parts were ever made.

I have 2 swing away carriers. They are both the way you describe.

Re: Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier ?

There are many different types of swing aways, depending on the manufacture. My current swing away puts the tire more to the right side of the truck so there isn't room for a can. The one I had, but never installed, for my '69 (now owned by another board member) had a can holder attached and put the spare more in the center of the tailgate, but it didn't have the upper can holder as you show in the photo.

I'd bet you can pick up some jerry-can holders at the local 4wd shop and mount them easily enough.

Re: Swing Away Spare Tire Carrier ?

I'm pretty sure the gas can carrier is modified on that one. You can see on the top of the strap that forms the carrier that it has a slot about 3" long. That is where a bolt goes throug a sliding bracket that clamps on the handle of a jerry can. The bottom of the strap should have a turn-up that catches the lip of the bottom of the can.

EDIT:
You can buy GI style carriers as pictured above many places and you can get the canvas strap and buckle reproduction. Just google military jeep parts.
