Here is the clincher - is the truck in Neutral or are you trying to do this in Park?
Try Neutral and tell us how it goes. Lks Dcvn |

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
tried it with every combination i could think of. park, nuetral, drive etc with and w/o the motor running. it still feels like there is something internal blocking it from going to 4 lo.
thanks again. |

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
Mine would not go into four lo, I looked at the linkage and it was loose. I tightened the bolts on the linkage up and now it works great.

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
I assume since you tightened the linkage you checked to see if anything was physically blocking it from moving. Otherwise, try to roll it forward slightly (not under engine power) and try again.
Have you check the fluid level in the t-case?

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
checked the fluid, linkage doe'snt have anything blocking it - there is still some room on the two rods for them to go one notch further into 4 lo. i've tried it again rolling it back and forth with and w/o the motor running - still stuck - i hate to break something by forcing it more - i'm not sure what it could be - driving me nuts

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
Hello dkeene.
Here is why mine wouldn't shift to 4 Lo. In the mid 80s Mom broke the shifter bolt off. She took it to a mechanic shop, and this is the mess they made. She didn't even know it wouldn't shift to 4 Lo, as she never needed it. Evidently the mechanic had trouble extracting the broken bolt, then trying to chase the threads, he broke the tap off in the hole. I know this for a fact as last winter I pulled the piece of tap out! Then he gave up and drilled a hole next to the stock one, tapped it and re assembled. 4Lo was the only gear affected. Later---DAC

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
thanks for the info - i tightened the linkage earlier and it seems to be ok - it does'nt appear to be messed up - maybe i'm missing something really obvius - this blazer had been sitting for quite awhile before i got it - now that i've gotten it road worthy, i found this problem. do you think it might be due to lack of usage - maybe 3 years time? - still working on it and still stumped.
thanks again, david |

Wow - that is some creative craftsmanship there 70gmcjimmy - I would have been a bit upset to see that on one of my cars after taking it to a 'mechanic'.

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
did you look at the shifter boot? I had one that I had mounted a new shifter boot in and didn't bother trying to locate the original screw holes into and just "made new holes" that were close with my screw-drill.......I put it in 4-low and it would pop out immediately...couldn't figure out the issue, then it dawned on me...the boot was inhibiting the shifter from going all the way in and the stress of the positioning of the new boot rubber quickly popped it back out because I messed up and didn't pay attention to the mounting.
Just sharing a mistake I made. Hope things work out for you. |

Re: np 205 wont shift to 4 lo
thanks for the reply - its not the boot because i've removed it to see the linkage from the top - it was also the easiest way to tighten the linkage. i'm about 4 beers into letting it rest for the night - hopefully i'll have better luck tomorrow. thanks again - david
