Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
Hi all -
My '72 C/10 LWB Highlander has a '67 283/TH350 in it. It runs great even if it's a little bit of a slug in the truck. Stock as far as I know except for HEI and headers w/ Flowmasters, with a QJet. It does have Edelbrock chrome valve covers with the oil fill cap, and the cast iron intake manifold does not have the front oil fill tube. I was at Corvettes at Carlisle this past weekend and bought a set of aluminum Corvette script valve covers, which were on my wishlist from the day I bought the truck. They do not have the oil hole provision, so I anticipated getting another intake that has the tube. Am I going to be stuck with another cast iron stock intake from an earlier year, or are there any vintage or current aluminum intakes that would allow for the oil tube? Thanks - Terry

Re: Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
I had the same issue... I run the smae era "Chevrolet" script covers on my 305 (dad had them and i HAD to use them... I ended up buying a 67-68 327 4bbl intake (cast iron) off of shuttermutt, and that had the oil filler tube... solved the problem, BUT i have seen some early edelbrock performers that have a flat pad where the oil fill could go and my machinist buddy said it wouldnt be too hard at all to mill a hole to fit the tube... so I now keep my eye open for an early performer for that purpose... hope that helps..

I have a Holley single plane that I think is the street dominator. It has a plug where the fill tube would go. I have no idea when it was purchased new (at least 9 yrs ago) so the design may have changed for newer stuff.

Thanks for the quick responses, guys. I'll start investigating these options. Any other input is welcome.

My edelbrock knock-off dual plane had a boss that could be machined out. Jegs and summit sell this intake under their own names. I bought mine from AFR. ~$99

I had an old Wiend single plane on my 327 years ago with a fron fill. They are out there but I doubt any are being made today.

Great post...I have been looking too. This will keep from punching holes and welding tubes into my Chevrolet script valve covers.

Re: Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
I have a Performer on my truck that I bought in '01 or so that has a pad for the oil filler, so they probably haven't been out of production for that long. What do you guys do for crankcase ventilation, and how does the engine run without a PVC valve?
Here's a pic of the intake on my truck. Notice the pad at the front of the intake...

Re: Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
Engines ran great with out the PCV from the first engine till they put em on in what 67? The fill tube cap is the vent (the cap is vented just like the vents you can install into a valve cover.) It is only to reduce the fumes under the hood. They can catch fire, explode so instead of venting under the hood, they invented the PCV (positive Crankcase Vent) to recirculate the fumes into the engine.

Re: Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
Yes, I have an older Edelbrock SP2P aluminum intake with the oil tube that comes out just ahead of the thermostat housing. PM me if interested.

Re: Is there an aluminum 283 intake with front oil tube?
The older small blocks had a PCV system at the back of the block. My 283 power pack motor has it. The PCV is used to burn the vapors from the crankcase instead of venting them to the atmosphere thus reducing emissions. It also lowers crankcase pressures and helps prevent oil leaks. I have an older aluminum intake on mine with the fill tube hole, but it is plugged with a freeze plug. It is an Edelbrock intake, I believe a Torker.
