Question about Fender and Grill Fits - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been searching through the forums here to find an answer so I wouldn't have to ask but there is so much info here I probably just didn't see it.

What my dilemma is, is that i have a '70 GMC short box 4wd that I'm fixing up and I think I want to switch over the front end to a chevy front end. I know I would need to get a chevy radiator support since the headlights are different, but are the way the fenders are shaped different? or is it just cosmetic differences (like the marker lights or something along those lines)

So I guess I was hoping you guys could help me out by telling me what year Chevy grills if any would fit with GMC fenders. (I was hoping the 69 or 70 grill would fit it)

If you keep the fenders, you can put a 67-68 chevy grill, but you'll have to change the hood. I **think** you can cut the dual headlight brackets off, to fit with the early front end also.

If you keep the hood, you'll have to swap the fenders and radiator support to fit either the 69-70 or 71-72 grills.

you're sure about having to find the more slanted hood if I used a 67 or 68 chevy grill? I don't want to change the hood, I like the steep angle on the 69 to 72's.

I guess I don't understand what's different about the fenders, I need to go find a chevy to look at up close.
The front area of the fender where the grill frame would seat on is different? thats why chevy grills wont fit it?

Sorry for the dumb questions, This is my first old truck that I'm restoring. I've always had 88-98 style chevy's, so this is my first oldie.

GM changed the leading edge of the Chevy fender for 69, and kept is through 72. The GMC stayed the same (which is the same as the 67-68 Chevy).

Same fender = 67-72 GMC, and 67-68 Chevy (with the marker light being the only difference).
Same fender = 69-72 Chevy

Same hood = 67-72 GMC, and 67-68 Chevy
Same hood = 69-72 Chevy (the only difference is 69-70 the bowtie is on the hood, 71-72 the bowtie is on the grill)

So, I guess if you want to keep the upright hood of the 69-72 era, you would have to do a little cutting & welding to it to make it match.

Alright, I understand the fender deal now, but what do you mean about the 67-68 chevy hood is the same as the 67-72 gmc hood. I could be wrong but arent the 67-68 chevy hoods the slanted ones which are different from whats on my GMC which is a 70. My hood has the steep angle on the front.

Oh and thanks for all the quick responses, you guys are really helpful. It's much easier looking for parts when you understand better what fits with what.

Everything is right except the hood details. The 67-68 gmc and the 67-68 chevy hoods are essentially the same, the 69-72 gmc and 69-72 chevy hoods are the same also.

You will need a sloped hood with the 67-68 chevy grill unless you want to do some MAJOR fab work.

The 69-72 chevy fenders have an indention that the 69-72 chevy grills fit into.

OK, gotcha! I'm not sure I have even looked at a 69-72 GMC in person, but just thought that the hoods were the same in that respect. Thanks for clearing that up!

Alright after looking at a bunch of pictures of 67 and 68 chevys, I understand a little more now. The front end on those years actually use the form on the front of the fenders as part of the "grill" instead of having a grill frame that goes around everything.

So if I were to use 70 hood and my 70 gmc fenders but changed to a 67-68 chevy grill, the grill would fit my fenders but hood would fall short of the top of the grill leaving an awkward looking gap there.

Does that sound right

Is that why there is that big trim piece on the top of my GMC grill? to meet the grill to the hood since the kept the same fenders from 67-72?

Here is a picture of a 72 pickup with a 67 hood on it. It's not a bolt on, it takes some serious fab work, but it just shows that it can be done.

Alright I see that its possible to put the 67 or 68 hood on a 69-72 but have you ever seen or heard of putting a 69-72 hood with a 67-68 grill set up. I know the hood fits the profile of the fender since the gmc fenders are the same as the 67-68 chevy fenders and they still changed there hood in 69 but I'm reslly curious to see how much of a gap there would be between the hood and where the grill starts.

Man the more I look at pictures of 67 and 68 chevys the more their front end is growing on me. At first I didnt like the slanted hood as much but now thats growing on me now.

and theres a 67 or 68 farm truck sitting out in a field down the road from me, it doesnt look all rusted and its been there for years. I should go knock on there door see whats going on with it. I could use it for parts.

Never hurts to ask! The 67-68 Chubbys are my favorites, I really like the slope of the hoop and the simple and elegant grill. Especially the hood!

I don't like the GMC front ends, too much chrome up there. But if I had to choose it would be the 67-68.

You can see where the 67-68 grill sits "inside" of everything, and the 69-72 covers or "wraps around" the fenders.

Yeah my front end looks like the one on the white GMC.

the 67-68 chevy front ends are really growing on me now though. I think thats what I'm going to switch mine to if I can find a parts truck.

My fenders should work according to everbody. Id just have to fill in the little holes where the fender trim was attached.

But I know i'd need to find a chevy radiator support because those are totally different? correct? since the gmcs have 2 headlights on each side and the chevys have 1. and I dont want to have to buy a new one of those. they r pretty pricey.

Any ideas on how the 69-72 hood would look or fit with the 67-68 front end? although im think now if i find a parts truck I might as well use that hood that i know will fit

Here's a pic I took when I was swapping sheetmetal on my truck, I know it's not the best, but it shows the gap between the 69-72 hoods and the 67-68 chevy grill. It's a good thing that I left the cardboard around the AC condenser or you wouldn't be able to see the gap at all.

Woz, you had it right up there... the 672 hoods... chevy or GMC, will be too short if you try to run it on a 67/68 chevy grill. You were also dead on about the chrome top bar on the top of the GMC grill starting in 69, that is to fill in the gap left (as seen in Steven's photos) between the short 69 and up hood, and the longer 67/68 or all year GMC. The fenders aren't actually longer, but the body lines are.

Hey thanks to everyone for all the help answering the questions. And thanks Longhorn for letting me know whether i was right or not with my description above, and to smbrouss for the picture.

I just joined this site since I finally got an old truck to fix up and you guys are awesome, and just seem to know tons about everything with these trucks (Ive been reading other threads too)

This is such a good resource for someone like me starting there first project. I'll try and get some pictures up soon
