Installing starter, which terminal ?

I removed the starter from my 69 GMC in June and had it rebuilt this past summer. My 69 GMC has a 305 from a 78/79 in it.

When I removed the wiring I thought I disconnected the main power wire and one wire going to a small terminal.

The problem is my new starter has two small terminals, one marked with an 'S' and one with an 'R'. Which one do I hook it up to?

purple wire to the S
It sounds like you don't have points anymore... if you did, the yellow would go to the R

Re: Installing starter, which terminal ?

Just one more questions, Longhorn Man does your computer ring a bell when I ask a question? You seem to answer all my questions..... THANKS

Now I am off to search out the best way to remove the inside door handles so I can install my new door locks.

Re: Installing starter, which terminal ?

I just heard a bell go off.

If you don't have a clip removal tool (5 bucks at the parts store) then slip a shop rag on the back side of the crank/handle, and slide it around the shaft. If there is some slop there, try and pull it out/push panel in and see what's back there so you know where you are trying to work.
The clip will fly out, and either hit you in the eye, or across the shop/driveway never to be seen again.

RING RING!

As my parts store is closed I am going to try the rag trick.

Then tomorrow buy the tool if available locally.

Re: Installing starter, which terminal ?

Ring Ring.....

A screw driver worked well. Clips are off. Passenger side ones seemed to be on backwards, ie I had to push them off from the side opposite the handle.

Oh well I am missing some parts now so I will have to wait until tomorrow to finish the job when I can go to the yard and pull the required parts of a parts truck. IT is raining and dark! This truck did not have door lock cylinders at all, and my new ones are just the cylinders. There must be a piece that attaches to the lock cylinders to work the lock mechanism! Maybe the door lock pawl!
