My first question is, can a t-5 transmission mount to a 350 engine without alot of fab. work. It is a S-10 unit. Next can they hold up behind a 350 ive heard that they are not the strongest 5 speed in the world, has anyone done this before? Im not planing to race my truck, just better highway running. any info would be great.

Would work fine behind a stock or mild 350. If you buy a used one inspect it carefully, try to find a heavy duty one with the hardend counter shaft, and heavy duty synchro. rings. Good luck. Joe

The heavy duty transmissions are called world class. They were not used in S-10's. The world class transmissions were used in Camaros and Firebirds with V-8's from the factory. The only problem with the Camaro and Firebird T-5's was that the shifter was on the back of the tail shaft. For a truck this puts the shifter under the bench seat unless you use buckets. The slick way to do this is to use an S-10 transmission tail shaft on a Firebird/Camaro world class transmission. The S-10 transmission tail shaft is a bolt on that moves the shifter much further forward to where you would want it for a truck with a bench seat. The second thing that you would want to look for is a T-5 with a manual speedo drive. After 1987(?) they went to an electronic speedo in the trucks. With the electronic speedo, you would need a converter (approx. $300) to drive your mechanical speedo. The following website has extensive discussion of this swap:

thanks for the info. the pre 87's are hard to find here, the one i had in mind is a 1991, a stupid question what is the speedo????

Hey Steve this is not a question about a transmission but about the rear end. I've heard that the S10 rear end will fit right in on a 63. Just wondering if you have heard of this before? Thanks

Sorry, I don't have any info on S 10 rear ends. I would think you could find something in the archives through a search either here or on the website that I referred you to.
