I'd bet a silver dollar you stuck it in 180 off. Or one cog off. That'll give you the backfiring. Recheck and make sure you got the #1 piston at top dead center on compression stroke, then stick in your distributor so the rotor drops in pointing at the # 1 plug wire on the cap.

Thumbs up

Backfiring thru the exhaust, sire sounds like it's 180 degrees out of time. Jog it over until #1 cyl. is on tdc & remove the cap & see where your rotor is pointing. Plug wires in the correct location? I realize this may sound like some pretty elementary stuff, but I've done it myself more times than i can count. PLEASE DON'T TAKE OFFENSE JOHN

did you try moveing the dist.from were you have it ?did it help any?tried to start or just kept backfiring?

if your sure its a 180 out just remove the dit. cap lossen the clamp bolt, pull straight up and turn to were the rotor points just the opposit of what you have, the oil pump drive shalf will line you up to drop staight down all the way against the block. if you lined it up the first time with your top dead center mark on balancer, then this should work.any questions feel free to call 360-532-1576 hope this helps.john

HOTROD -- IT SEEMS I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF ALONE AT THIS POINT TOO. I USE A REMOTE STARTER. I TAKE OUT MY #1 PLUG (FIRST ONE ON THE DRIVER SIDE BANK) STICK MY LITTLE FINGER IN THE HOLE, & BUMP IT TILL I FEEL AIR TRYING TO PUSH MY FINGER OUT OF THE HOLE. THEN I KNOW #1 CYL. IS ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE. I PUT THE DIST. IN SO THAT THE ROTOR IS POINTING AT THAT CYL. (#1). THE # 1 SPARKPLUG WIRE TERMINAL ON THE CAP IS THE SECOND ONE, CLOCKWISE FROM THE SQUARE PART ON YOUR DIST. CAP WHERE THE COIL WIRES HOOK UP. HOPE THIS HELPS. JOHN
PS IF YOUR GOING TO ROTATE YOUR DIST. 180 DEG. , MARK THE LOCATION OF THE ROTOR BUTTON WITH A MAGIC MARKER ON THE DIST. GOOD LUCK

Wet a chunk of paper towel and plug the #1 hole with it. Bump the ignition until you hear the plug blow out. Turn vibration damper / harmonic balancer by hand until your timing mark lines up exactly. That's TDC, and best way to find it yourself if you don't have a remote starter.
