Thinking about buying 2001 z71

Was contemplating getting an 01 silverado reg cab, shortstep z71. Color is red, w/ 77K miles. Are there any problem areas w/ these that I should be aware of and look for? Price is around 12K, I'm guessing that's good? Any insight/comments are appreciated. What do you think, good or bad overall?

Re: Thinking about buying 2001 z71

These are pretty solid trucks, my 2000 5.3l Z71 has over 175K on it now

basics for a 2001 are a faulty sending unit, bad 4x4 push button control in the dash and bad ABS sensors. Those may have already been replaced by 77K miles.

Good luck with the purchase

Re: Thinking about buying 2001 z71

12K seems high for a regular cab. I paid 16K for my extended cab 2000 5.3L Z71 3 years ago. It had 67K on the clock at that time. It's got 106K on it now. Other than a tune up and oil changes, I haven't done anything to it.

I think 9-10K would be a more fair price for a reg cab.

Mine is a 2000, no problems up until recently .. and it's probably the fuel pump or sending unit, truck has 55,000 on it

Like said 12k sounds high for a regular cab, Kelley Blue Book Value is 9-10k ... does it have the 4.8 V8 or the 5.3 V8?

5.3L engine. I thought it was kind of high, too. Edmunds.com shows it to be around $9-10K also. Saw am '04 GMC SLT Ext cab Z71 w/ 36K on ebay for $18,500. It's red, too. That's what I'd like, but payment would prob be too high.

Thanks for all of the responses. Keep 'em coming.

Re: Thinking about buying 2001 z71

Just as a comparison, I am looking at a 2002, 2500HD, Reg Cab, Long Box, 6.0L, 4x4, manual tranny, 62k miles - for $14K. But I am not willing to spend over 12K for it. Once I get the OK from the misses, we will see if they will sell it to me or not.

If you do buy one...spend $500 and get a custom tune from Westers Garage up here in Alberta. Or Nelson is the other one i've heard of and he's in the states.

With the 5.3l you have a 87,89,93 octane tune options. I think the numbers are around 25 hp increase at the wheels and users are averaging about 2 mpg increase.

More power, etter fuel mileage.

Check out the performance forum at fullsizechevy.com then search the word "westers".
Be prepared t do some reading.

Yep - or spend half that with a tune from www.wait4meperformance.com or Justin on FSC

Re: Thinking about buying 2001 z71

Yea, I've yet to install my 285/70/R17's on the truck, and as soon as I do, I'm gonna hane Justin do my tune... Under 200 bucks and I've heard GREAT THINGS ABOUT HIM.... not to mention always awesome things about his after sales help. I'm just waiting to do mine until i put my H2 wheels and bigger tires, so I'm not reading wrong on the speedo and I can get an accurate count on the mileage... Its said to pick up about 2 mpg if u dont drive like a madman.

Re: Thinking about buying 2001 z71

i own 2000 ext cab 4x4. 135000 miles. fuel pump was a problem around 70000 miles. tranny went out 5000 miles ago. this is common for these trucks the trannies are too weak. i could have got a beefier jasper trans for 300 more. but the week before it went out i bought my 79 swb scottsdale.
