Speedometer Gear Leaks

I Have A 71 Lwb K10 With A 350 4sp Manual And A New Process 205 T/case. The Speedometer Gear Leaks Like A Siv (whatever A Siv Is?). I Took It Apart And There Is No O Ring Or Inner Seal Whatsoever. Are These Available Anywhere - Someone Help Me Please::

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

Two things that usually cause these to leak are over-filled gear box and or a worn housing or gear. If you noticed, the gear shaft is spiral cut and this constantly pulls the grease away from the cable end. Any wear will cause it not to work very well or not at all. The housing and gear should still be available from GM.

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

There should be an o ring on the outer housing and a press in seal that the spedo gear slides thru. The o ring should be easy to find but you will have to go to napa or oreillys for the inner seal. I have had to replace both on my green and white with th350.

A sieve separates wanted/desired elements from unwanted material using a tool such as a mesh, net or other filtration or distillation methods

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

Thanks, I Never Knew What A Sieve Was Or Ment! And Of All My Internet Search I Never Thought To Ck With Napa! I Would Rather Get The Housing And Gear From Gm - They Seem To Hate To Look Up Old Parts. Anything With Less Than A 17 Digit Vin Is A Pain! She Aint Overfull As It Will Lose 2 Qts In A Month! Yikes

Somewhere In My Vast Inventory (aka-mess) Of Papers, I Have The Name Of A Company That Rebuilds Those Things. They're 35+ Years Old And Most I've Seen Leak At Least A Little Bit.

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

I AM A LITTLE CONFUSED-IF IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE SPIRAL CUT THEN MINE IS WORN BEYOND RECOGNITION. IT LOOKS LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE A SEAL BUT NONE EXISTS. AND LAST - IF THE NP 205 IS THE BULLET PROOF T/C THAT EVERYBODY WANTS AND SO MANY ARE REBUILT AND ADAPTED TO QUADS THEN WHY CANT I FIND ANYTHING ON SPEEDOMETER GEARS (DRIVEN GEAR AND HOUSING) - DO THESE PEOPLE JUST CAP THEM OFF AND FORGET THEY NEED A SPEEDO? I AM SORRY FOR WHINING BUT THIS IS DIFFICULT. I HAVE NEVER RUN INTO A PART I COULDNT FIND FOR MY 56 BEETLE! Y'ALL HAVE GIVEN ME INSIGHT THOUGH AND I AM SURE WE WILL FIND THE ANSWER

I thought they were supposed to do that..........I have owned 150+ GM products and I think 149 of them leaked there.

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

I've fought that gear leaking thing on many GM vehicles that I have had over the years. Seems that there are two style available. Gm used the ones without a seal on many manual transmissions. I guess they figured the heavier grease would not leak out ? (wrong). Get an adapter from a Chevy Turbo 350 automatic, the smaller style, (not the big 400 style), best to get a new one if you can. If getting a used one, check the inside bore for any wear, replace inner seal, put the clip back in over it and a new O ring on the outside. Get a new gear if it has any wear at all, might have a groove worn at the seal area, and you have done all that you can do.

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

Mine leaked untill I replaced the Gear itself. The trans shop pointed out the nice groove that had worn itself all the way around. no more leaks now.

Re: Speedometer Gear Leaks

Well now, while surfing this site I found someone who had a link to a site that actually had the exact repair = see http://www.norcalbigdawgs.net/Gallery/album49
I dont think I am still losing gear oil - time will tell. Still drips but I think it is because the ratio adapter and speedometer cable were full of gear oil!
Thanks for all the help
