Another modern upgrade
I just finished installing a self diming mirrow in the old truck, with compass and temp. I wanted to route the wires through the top of the cab and down the back, but gave up after about a hour of trying. So they enter just above the windshield and exit at the sunvisor, over to the door weather strip and then down, so the only expossed wire is about 2 1/2" at the sunvisor over to the door weatherstrip. I can live with that. Anyway just thought I would share.

Re: Another modern upgrade
yeah, the stock mirrors are tiny anyways, this sounds like a great upgrade.
How did you mount them to the sheetmetal? |

Re: Another modern upgrade
Here are a couple pics. I have ordered new visor's so once I tape the exposed wires and install the new visors, it will clean things up a lot. Here is a link to the mirror I purchassed. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Auto-...QQcmdZViewItem

Re: Another modern upgrade
If I had a good wire fish, I probably would have been able to do it. But I was using a coat hanger. I will proably get a wire fish and do it the way I wanted to at some point. I was just to anxious to get it done. I know there is room to get from the front to the back, but trying to get a coat hanger to make the drop at the back proved to be impossible or at lest it was for me .

Re: Another modern upgrade
I understand... I was just trying to give you some extra motivation to do it the way I thought you preferred it being done.

Re: Another modern upgrade
There are five wires, two of them are for the temp, one constant 12 volt, one switch activated 12 volt, and one ground wire.

Re: Another modern upgrade
Thought I would add, that if you install one of these and want to run the wires around to the back of the cab for a cleaner look, you will need to splice in aprox 5' of wire per strand. A little more work, but well worth it.

Re: Another modern upgrade
You can buy a fish tape for about 8 bucks in the electrical section at wal-mart, that will let you fish it from the cab corner to your opening above the mirror in one shot. Goodluck, nice upgrade, I wonder if one can be installed with working On-Star???????????

Re: Another modern upgrade
that looks cool and all but just my opinion. i like these old trucks because there simple, not because i dont know or cant learn how to work on new cars, but just because its simple. the new mirror, ok. fuel injected engine, right on the border for me. onstar..... not no but Hell No. ill be damned if im gonna willingly make my truck trackable. and im not a conspiracy freak or anything i just know my facts. i would drive a new car and not care if im being tracked, but when im in my old truck, i will not willingly do that. just my opinion.
