67 Drag Truck & 72 Cheyenne Super

The '67 was bought by my grandfather in 1977 and used as an everyday driver until 1980 or so when my dad and him decided to go drag racing. They started with the usual stuff (more motor, gear, converter, etc). The truck was running low 12's with a mild big block and all steel body. In 1984, they did a front half on the truck, cutting the front frame off and welding up a Jegster front frame with Vega/Monza suspension. The motor was a 408 BB with a Crower fuel injection setup, TH400 with a Spragless ATI converter (4500 stall) and 12 bolt car rearend (MW axles, Spool and 5.38 gears). After the weight shaving the truck's fastest pass was 10.60 @ 130 MPH. The coolest part is the tilt front end my grandpa made using all the factory sheet metal. The fenders, cowl, and grill shell are one solid piece the tilts up 90 degrees. The truck has been setting since 1990 and we (my dad and I) pulled it out yesterday to bring it back to life. The '72 is my truck I've had since '97. It was a factory 402 (Now a 468, TH400, 2800 stall, and 3.73's) and ran 13.02 last weekend on drag radials. Enough talk, here's the pics.

Here's my youngest son getting the feel for things

The 72 I bought in high school and built myself, so yes, it's mine. The 67 is going to be a joint venture between my dad and I, as my Grandpa passed 10 yrs. ago.

Man,I am just too danged inpressed to say!Keep on talking,I love this stuff.Lot`s of trucks out there and history along with them.
Both trucks are awesome.Who wouldn`t want this "beauty and the Beast" combo? The best of the best,a first year beast, short and simple and a final year high option beauty with plenty of "GO".The`67 is one bad stepper and lots of great work in it.Got patina?I wouldn`t touch the appearance at all.The`72 CheyenneSuper is a perfect example of the year.I can`t say I`ve ever seen an olive interior in an ochre truck.Doesn`t matter at this point if anyone likes that or not. It`s original and unique.Just shows you could get what you want back then.Set`s it off in it`s own way!
Very nice pair.If life was a poker game, you`d beat most hands out there.

When I bought the 72, I was super reluctant (didn't know any better) about the color combo. My first impression wasn't good, but then I saw it was a big block with lots of options and quickly changed my mind. The factory 402 had 105,000 miles and lasted exactly 2 weeks when the oil pump pick up fell off of it. Perfect excuse to build the 468 it has now. Thanks for the compliments guys.

Great looking trucks. I really like the way the 1 piece front end was done - your grandpa had some talent making that!

Re: 67 Drag Truck & 72 Cheyenne Super

I would LOVE to see your 72 and mine head to head on a track - crowds would go nuts in Vegas to see two BBC powered 72's gunning high 12's, low 13's barrelling down the track together.

Any work done to your suspension? (the 72), and what size slick are you running?

The suspension is all stock, front and back. I had planned to install new shocks on the back, but left them old and soft. It seems to hook really well. I had a pair of 295/60/15 Hoosier Quick Time DOT tires that hook really hard, but I think they are too tall. I'm looking for a 26-27 inch tall slick, 9-10" wide to replace them with.
