GMC center support

I have a 75 GMC that was recently in a wrck as some of you all know.
One of the parts damaged was the center brace that sits behind the grill, its the support for the hood latch. all the catalogs show Chevy & GMC share the same support, so, I bought a new one, along with the grill brackets from Brothers Truck. we figured out early that the grill brackets are wrong. We just discovered today the center support is also wrong, it wont alllow the GMC grill(much thicker than a Chevy grill) to fit in the whole, the support is in the way.
has anyone else heard of this ? John

Re: GMC center support

If the grille supports are the same for all the gmc's you might want to try at j&b automotive south of Washington on Clearview road off 47 they have a 77 or a 78 gmc there with the grille still in it.

Re: GMC center support

Are you using a '75 grill, or is it a different year? Sounds like you might have a 73/74 grill

Re: GMC center support

Not sure how much this helps, but my '73 has a curved center brace (like a 2"-3" offset) to accept the deeper grille... while the radiator support I bought from a later 70's truck has a brace that is straight all the way down with no offset to it. I believe the straight-brace unit came from a '78 or '79. If you need pics I can post them tomorrow.

Re: GMC center support

Blackstone, I think your right, the one I had before the wreck was more curved, sat closer to the radiator ,allowing room for the GMC grill, the one they sent is more strait up & down. heres a pic of my grill, its the 75-76 GMC, Chevy grills arent nearly as deep

Re: GMC center support

I have a 73 or 74 3/4 ton in the pasture . If you can post pics of what braces you need I will look and see if the parts are on the truck . Frank

Re: GMC center support

that looks more like the one I had. Im thinking 73-76 GMC used a differant support than Chevy, cause thats not like the one they show in the catalogues or that I was sent. The one I recieved doesnt have that kick back to it. If you order one for a 73..it wont look like that.

Re: GMC center support

I checked my parts manual, and the center support or catch asm. in GM speak is the same for GMC from 73-76, Chevy 73 -74, the part number is 6271810 in case it is stamped on the part. Hope this helps.

Re: GMC center support

The thing that bothers me about LMC and there 73-74 Chevy grills and any 73-80 GMC grills is that they just don't offer anything for them. I had a 73-74 Cheyenne Super grill in my 78 that the previous owner pulled from a junkyard and installed, I thought it was the coolest look.

I have a 77 GMC now and I love the grill in it but the paint on it has faded. I'd love to put another grill in it but the only thing LMC sells is a generic chevy knock off grill with no logo. Just doesn't have the same cool look.

Re: GMC center support

If your grill is in otherwise good shape, scuyy it up & paint it.
DSWANNCUT...yep your right...but the Brothers, Classic & LMC catalogs list 1 part for all Chevy & GMC's. I found the correct one...thanks for the pic Jeff @ a junkyard for 12.00.While I was there I may have found a little goldmine of 73-80 parts, I didnt have time to browse, & the owners a bit odd...arent all junkyard owners ? LOL
