Who can tell me the correct center caps for a 76?

1976 Chevy 1/2 2wd. A buddy of mine wants to put a set of 'correct' center caps, hub caps, ralley centers, on his truck. The problem is, one place is saying the truck came out with actual hub caps for that year, another place says that they weren't the hub caps, but just the centers that went around the 5 lug pattern with the small emblem in the middle (which are the ones that are on it now). Help!

It depends on what wheel.
Rally wheels had trim rings and caps
White steel had either the small dog dish with the bowtie emblem in the midde covering just the lugs OR a full hubcap that had the emblem

Re: Who can tell me the correct center caps for a 76?

There are two different styles of Rally center caps . The early ones had a real skinny and tapered center and the later ones are the Rally centers that everyone runs . To be correct , if the truck came with rallys , he will need the early ones . The problem with the early ones is that they are not as nice looking as the later ones and I dont think they are reproduced . I think they changed in 78 . Frank

Great answer, in my opinion!

Sometimes if you check around on eBay you will actually find the earlier narrow centered ralley caps that were used on the '74 - '77 C10/C15 trucks, although they are MUCH rarer than the '78 and later type. I found a NOS set of these on auction, but some other lucky buyer got them.

The only other minor point in locating the perfectly correct caps is that the '76 and '77 caps will have a bright finish on the flanged portion through which the lug nuts pass. The '74 and '75 caps use a darker charcoal paint on that area. The '76 and later C10/C15 trim rings were also deeper and had a rounded shoulder design which contrasted against the narrow square shouldered version used on the earlier wheels. When shopping for these parts, one should note that the facts vary a little for other ralley wheel applications; i.e. for K-series models and G-series vans.

I will try to find some pictures to illustrate and post them.

Re: Who can tell me the correct center caps for a 76?

Old Chevy Lover ,
Those are the correct early center caps for Rally wheels , you just dont see many with them still on . Most people run the later center cap since they are so available . I think I have 2 or 3 sets of NOS chevy caps but none that are the old style like that . If he wants his truck to be correct , the ones on it are correct . That is a NICE looking truck by the way . Thanks for the info, and the compliments. It's all original with 29,xxx miles on it. David's dad bought it brand new and only used it when it was needed to haul something. Other than that, he drove his car.
