New Guy in San Jose could use help

Hello Everyone,
I've been the proud owner of a 59' GMC Stepside for about 15 years now. Gramps bought it brand new and only clocked 92K on it before giving it to me. I've put another 30K on it as a weekend driver. It's bone stock. 270cid, 3 on the tree, and never had so much as a radio installed. (Still has the speake r and head unit blanks installed.) Motor never opened up.
Anyway, it's rear crankshaft seal has been M.I.A. for years now, and has trouble maintaining oil pressure w/o a generous helping of Lucans Oil Stabilizer. Recently I noticed some water in the oil. Changed the head gasket but the problem did not go away. I'm thinking the head may be cracked or worse.
Anyone have a reccomendation for a machine shop in the SF Bay Area? I hate to take it just anywhere. I don't imagine shops see GMC 270 Straight Six's every day.
Any advice appreciated. Thanks -SF

Welcome to the board from South Mississippi! Hate to hear you're having trouble, may get a quicker/better answer on the 47-59 board, or the West board on the Regions page.

Re: New Guy in San Jose could use help

Welcome to the board from..... ummmmm a little below San Jose

Anyway a guy I used to know specialized in 55-9 GMCs and lived up in the San Jose area, I'll see if I can't find out if he has parts or knows a good machine shop to use. Might take a bit to get in touch so sorry about that!

Re: New Guy in San Jose could use help

Welcome from another San Josean!

If I was in your shoes and wanted to be careful with who touched my truck, I'd pay a little extra and bring it to Speed Merchant on Lincoln near San Carlos. They've been around since I was in high school (long long time ago). They build race engines for both street and strip and so people have higher expectations for their work.

I'm sure there are other good shops out there, but if you can't get another good recommendation, I'm sure these guys will do you right.

Good luck!
