Talking Wood Grain Dash...?

Hey - anyone seen repo wood grain dashes?

I'm really disappointed with the giant vinyl "stickers" that are sold by various places...

How do you guys replicate or get an original look?

I'm hoping to have a woodgrain style dash for my '72 Sierra Grande...and the sticker version isn't doing it.

You might try wilsonart or formica laminates at HD or Lowes, etc.

I've had this question rolling around in my head for the longest time. When you apply these stickers to the cluster, how well do they stick? Every dash cluster I've seen has a slight texture to it and I didn't think that would allow it to lay down smooth. Also, do you generally put them on the clusters that are purely chrome, or the black ones with the chrome edge? Thanks in advance.

The problem is that the stickers are not cut right and don't fit exactly. They adhere OK. The problem with the 2 I've tried:

Holes aren't in the right spot for the guages.
Material is too thin or soft or something, the bezels for the headlight and the wiper switch "pull" on the material. Once it gets hot (it's hot in TX) it pulls away from the dash around those bezels.

Certainly someone has something they've used and had good results with?

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

I've been thinking about this for a while also. I am either going to use a hardwood veneer or make my own bezel out of plywood or hardwood. You also could try 1/4" plywood, which might be flexible enough to bend to the correct shape. If I make my own bezels, I'll be sure to post instuctions and maybe even make a few extra to sell. -Jamie

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

The factory didn`t use mylar or any other stickers. It`s photo-etched onto a plastic piece die-cut to fit over the cluster and bonded. The piece on the glovebox is photo-etched onto a piece of aluminum.
When you apply the mylar over a non-woodgrain cluster the texture shows through. They usually shrink around the switches, too.I`d like to know of a factory replica myself.

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

I have has both NOS woodgrain dash bezels and the NOS woodgrain appliques. The appliques were made from what looks to me like counter top material with a hot-melt glue applied to the back. The Bezel itself is grey where the chrome is on the original ones installed in the trucks from the factory. WES

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

I have one of the bezel, but not the applique. I took my last bezel and made a tach/vac dash from it. WES

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

I don't think the door panels or the glove box was a sticker originally. JMO. I know that Gary Terry ( Cheyenne Superman out of Texas) used to duplicate the bezel, glove box and 72 door panels and it looked excellent.

Re: Wood Grain Dash...?

Thanks Shawn. I have a couple of speed warnings here that I could replace the speedometer with. I have the correct tin, cable, and NOS buttons too. I just haven't decided that I want to do that or not...lol WES
