1 round or 2 ?????

I have the front coil springs out of my 81 Stepper, in the middle of a static drop and want to cut the springs down. Seems like I remember reading here that 2 rounds was the most recommend and still be streetable. 1 round = about 2in, so 2 rounds = 4in......is this right..... Tell me what you think.....

Truck is completely stock. No baggs or spindles anywhere.....
Guess I'm just to cheap...

Thanks for any and all advice...

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

I think it varies from 2-3 inches per coil
If I remember correctly, there is only about 6-7 inches between you lower A-arm & you X-member
So you may bottom out a lot

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

Thanks for the reply Spray-Bomb,
I did a simple Flip on the rear and just need to level out the front. I'm leaning toward cutting 2 rounds out. I do understand that with 2 rounds it will give up some ride quality, just don't want it to ride like a "Goat wagon".....

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

2 rounds is a bit much ... but if you go 2 it is definitely gonna ride like a goat wagon

go 1 round first ... reassemble ... if it's not low enough, then disassemble and cut a half round. It's a lot easier to "ease up on" it as opposed to going too far to begin with.

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

Shane and Royo,
I got the truck up on jacks earlier today and about decided that 1 round was all I wanted to cut. Like all of you have said, I can always cut more later if needed. I don't mind the extra work.
Thanks guys...

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

No, not really.
That is the factory dash under all the padding. It was green from the factory and didn't fit the theme I was going for, so I just stripped it to bare metal and painted it. Still want to come up with something different to do with it, just not sure yet.

I'm always up for suggestions and ideas. Shoot Em my way if ya got any.

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

I did what everybody suggested and cut 1 round out, reinstalled the springs, and it still sits entirely too high. Tomorrow I'm going to pull them out again and cut another round.

I am glad I took your advice and didn't cut 2 rounds from the "get go". I still don't mind the extra work.

Spray-bomb, Shane, and Royo...
Thanks for all the advice...

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

maybe with all those holes you could install a whack-a-mole game in the dash for when your stuck in traffic?

or maybe use speaker box carpet to cover it?use 3m adhesive spray to hold it on?

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

OK,
But you still can't ake a half round out of the coil spring, (can you) doesn't seem like it would ever seat up properly...
Would you mind giving a little more explaination?
Thanks.

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

sure you can cut 1/2 a round ... or a 1/4 round ... with as much as you are cutting, it's not going to stay "seated" anyway.

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

You could install a lot of cigarette lighters in them holes.

You can turn all them holes into beer/soda taps. Have like different kegs of beer or soda in the bed, and plumb them into the cab.

They may not be the best ideas, but they are ideas just the same.

Re: 1 round or 2 ?????

Hey Shane,
I did some cutting and grinding, pulled them out and put them back in. What I wound up with was 2 full rounds removed from the springs. I'm going to have to come up with a way to secure the spring in the upper pocket.

In other words, You were right, 2 rounds is too much. But that is the stance I was looking for.

Drove it around the neighborhood yesterday and it rode as good as stock.
Thanks for everything.
