Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

No offense to any board members who may just happen to be auto glass installers....but I need a second to vent.....
*activate Rant Mode*
Last time I got a glass installed, they came to me...and put my glass in more to one side than the other...causing the seal to be all crinkled in the upper corner. I had to pop it back out and install it myself. I assumed it was because it was in the yard, kinda hot, and the guy was no more than a kid.

Fast forward 8 months later to this past Saturday.

I have been trying to get a windshield ever since the tree fell and took out the last one.....

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

Anywho...not wanting to use the last company again, I finally get around to finding a popular (well advertised) glass shop to do the work. I make plans to go several times, but my schedule had other things for me to do.

GLASS MASTERS
452 Hwy 49 South
Richland, MS 39218
601-933-9500

Heather - Original contact who urged me to come in on a Saturday
Peggy Sue - Person at the counter Saturday, September 8, 2007

The 'manager' Heather tells me I can come in on Saturday and she will have the glass waiting.
Less than an hour. We have our most experienced guy in the shop on Saturdays.
So I show up, and sure enough, my glass is on site. Everyone else had to be transported from the local warehouse, so mine was taken right into the shop.
(I drove 45 minutes to get there with no glass at all and safety goggles on.)

2 HOURS LATER, it still is not installed. The guy decided he would save it until he finished all the late-model glasses because it would not go in. I asked if he was using a rope to install it? He looked at me like I was making fuel suggestions to NASA.

I was starting to grow impatient. I had to make the 45 minute return drive to attend my daughter's 7th birthday party. I figure I would visit the front office again.
The chic in the front office (that's Peggy Sue) claimed "Well, it is a 1969, and they are usually an all day job".
Then why-the-f-word did Glass Masters manager Heather tell me an hour or less to begin with????? I made them wrap the glass safely and put it in the bed of my truck. I paid for 'glass only', loaded up my truck after the NASA engineer pulled it out of the bay (that alone took over 15 minutes) drove home...again with goggles, and tackled the job myself.

I timed my install, just to see if it was an all-day job.

No wild fishing story...My non-trained-non-glass-certified-shade-tree-mechanic-wanna-be-butt did it start-to-finish in exactly 27 minutes.

Someone needs to change the company slogan to.....
If we can't glue it...We can't do it

I think currently it is "What Grandma Says, Grandma Does" (but I think she is getting the Alzheimer's disease)

*Rant mode off

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

You have my simpathy. My experiences with glass installers have also been brutal.
When I had the truck painted 5 years ago, they took out the frt and rear glass to inpect for rust and get a cleaner paint job. Well the front window leaked so bad that while driving in the rain there was a small waterfall coming in the passenger side. I took it back and they reinstalled. It leaked less. i took it to another shop. They reinstalled it and it leaked a little less. I sealed it with silicon and it didn't leak.
Move forward 5 years. Had to have the drip rails repaired and roof painted. Again the glass was removed (much to my dismay). Front leaks a bit. Rear was leaking badly, which I didn't notice until I changed out the seats. Result, One cab corner is starting to rust.
Through my local parts supplier, I got ahold of a retired glass guy who only does old stuff. He came to my house and reinstalled the rear window for $45 and it no longer leaks.
That's my story.

Thumbs up Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

Had about the same experience when I was trying to get mine put in. Local major glass shop came out 3 times to install it. 1st time the glass was too big. 2nd time the one guy couldn't do it by himself. 3rd time, there were 3 of them, and that glass whipped all of them. The gasket was all wrinkled like yours at the two top corners. Told them to take it out, and I wanted my money back. Had a guy who does glass work for custom cars come out, and within 45 minutes, him and his dad were done and standing around drinking a pop.And it was about $75.00 cheaper.

You should of installed it right there in there shop in 27 min. and then demanded your install money back and then pay you for installing it on a customers truck. It would of been worth it to see the "How did he do that" stupid look on ther faces.

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

I would have just freakin' haaaaad to do it in the parking lot, in the most conspicuous spot i could find. and had to put a sign (4x8 sheet of plywood would be about right) in the bed so that passing traffic could see.

although the sign might take longer to assemble than the install....but then again you have feed the spite! lol

only good thing about them doing it is the liability they assume. If it breaks then they paid for it, not you..... of course that's IF they can do it...

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

hey guys,

my father was a bodyman for 30 plus years. he's put in a ton of glass going way back in years. he says that the glass in our trucks are pretty easy to put in if they are the standard style. he says the ones with the chrome trim in the rubber are alot harder to put in..

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

I had a similar problem when I went to replace the windshield in my truck, they quoted me $75 bucks if I brought the windshield in, then after buying the windshield they refused to put it in.... Anyway I still have a good front windshield waiting for me to install

Re: Auto Glass Installers...well....suck!

Putter, perfect slogan for most shops, for sure.I`ve needed a windshield in my Highlander since I got it.I`ve been asking all around to get a shop with someone other than a "Glue Tech".One shop keeps coming up,so I`ll try them. They are an upholstery/glass shop.I`ve been anticipating a clown destroying my stainless moulding.I hope they do well.I forgot to get by Vintage Glass at Carlisle and get my glass after checking their stock.DOH!!I don`t want one shipped.I late to make things complicated,I guess.
BTW,I`ve done the no glass/no hump thing before.Did you try standing and pokin` your head out the windshield area.Kinda freaks oncoming traffic out a bit. It`s impossible not to give a few rebel yells,either.Hmmm...goggles.Why didn`t I think of that?

Honestly, if I didn't have to be back at home for my daughters b-day party, I would have sat there all day and watched this 'professional' install it.
It looked a lot like a Monkey-f'n-a football.
What I was actually waiting on was for this guy to tell me it would have to be done on Monday.

And just the fact that they were giving me attitude...Like I was putting THEM out by asking them to work on my old truck. Everyone else was a quick insurance claim. My truck was the only 'cash' deal.

I plan to call them, express my dis-pleasure, then ask if they have internet access. I will forward them the link to THIS thread and let them see that I put their name out in public for others to avoid.

If they supply the windshield and you don't pay until it's done then it would cover them breaking it;....

only bad part is my local shops want $300+ for the windshield plus install...
