I'm looking for a little help. I've got a 68 stepside I'm wanting to swap the old bed for a later model sportside. Anybody have some pics of this install. Any advice is helpfull. Thanks.

As you can see, the wheel wells don't match. Newer stepside bed + old truck = a trend that died 10 years ago

New fenders can be had for your original step bed, why frankenstein it?

anybody got pics of the install? maybe the brackets. And how wide of atire-rim combo can you use. I've got 295/50/15 on 10" wheels.

I keep hearing people say "the wheelwells are different". Well I hate to tell em lots of cars have different wheelwells front and back. Look at the 57 Chevy, people that know nothing about cars can identify a 57 Chevy. It has wheelwells that aren't the same front and back and you don't hear people griping about it. Anywho enough for my rant about the wheelwell thing

. The first truck I saw with a later model bed I really liked. It was dark green and had factory lower moldings that fit the new bed amazingly well. The truck looked all stock and original aside from the bed. Again I really liked that one, now I don't care for it so much. It seems to have lost that custom touch since it's been done so many times. Now in most cases (but not all) someone is either cutting corners or had a budget that ran short and is using what was available to them. BUT, isn't that what we all claim hot rodding to be about? Getting by with what you have to work with? If you like the later model bed or just can't afford a factory style bed, go for it! I'm just glad to see people doing whatever has to be done to keep these old trucks running! As previously stated it's your truck! Do what's going to make you happy!

Of all of them I think that Mike Nutt did the best job of it by shortening the back of the bed to be more proportional with the rest of the truck. If I were to do it (and I'm not) I'd graft a section of wheel arch into the fenders to make them match. Like so:

A few years ago there was a yellow '69 that was built in CA., by a guy last name of McPherson. He drove it to FL. One of the subtlest restyling tricks that was done was to incorporate the wheel arches on all four corners, from an '88-98.

After seeing the truck that had 67-72 wheel arches on both ends, including the later sportside bed, I'm of the opinion that the later arches look better. Since the sportside bedsides are fiberglass, I'd change the arches on the front fenders and go for it. It won't look bad. The contour on the side of the bed aligns very nicely with the lower contours of the cab.

On this body style, they don't look bad. On a '60-66, they suck.

As for the comment on '57's, for example, that was back in the day when styling cues called for smaller wheel openings. I have an old (67) issue of Honest Charley's Speed Shop catalog, showing fender skirts on one of our trucks. You know that sucks.
