tranny / trasfer (best way to go)

Question for you with the knowledge on the subject. I want to either put a 205 transfer behind my th350 or a sm465/208 combo in my truck. Which is better and will the 465/208 combo be able to go into a '58 truck very easily? I have a th350/203 right now for it but do not like the idea of putting the part time kit into the 203 tranfer case.
Any help would be great.

Thanks, B.Sharp

TH350/NP205 is good.TH400/NP205 is better but the th350 will be a good choice, you shouldnt need the th400.Any route with the np205 is the right way to go.You can get a 205 behind the 465 too,if you look in the right place..70-?? (ending in late 70s maybe).I've got both setups to set you up,just dont know if I want to sell either yet...

With Dustin. Do what ever you like transmission wise, but stick to the NP 205.

Re: tranny / trasfer (best way to go)

But will the 205 bolt directly up to the th350? I know that a 208 will not bolt up. All I have right now is the th350/203. I'm trying to get the sm465/205/208. I'm not sure what trasfer case is in it yet. I would rather have the 205 gear to gear and not mess with the chain ordeal. The sm465 is in a mid 80's 3/4t truck. I'm going to try to get the whole truck so I will have all the hardware to do the switch to the 4sp.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: tranny / trasfer (best way to go)

If you've got a 4wd Th350,the adapter plate will bolt to the tranny, and then the transfer case (the TH350 27 spline version) will bolt on that..Dont let the adapter plate sound like something needed to put something on something else it wasnt originally designed for, they all had them...

I would go with the 350 205 combo that way if you ever want to add an over drive you can slap a 700r4 in on the cheep.I went to high school with a guy that had a red 58 he had it on I think a 72 frame.

Re: tranny / trasfer (best way to go)

The NP205 is a bulletproof favorite. But,if you`re not looking to build a rig that`ll put a drivetrain to the test and want to use what you can get for cheapest just to get it going a 350/208 is fine. That `80s truck may have that. The NP241 from a late solid axle Blazer/Suburban would be a good one, too. It could be found mated to an O/D tranny already. These would be in 66-91s.A TH400 will waste power on a stock to mild motor.A TH350 will do all you could ever ask from it.You can find the TH350/NP205 combo for about $300 if you keep a watch out. It`s best to buy a combo and get the linkage & mounts included.

I'd go 465/208 if I were you. The chain only drives the front output, and they are pretty decent t-cases anyway. Not to mention no drive sleeves like the TH350 and earlier SM465's. I guess it boils down to preference, and I like stick a lot better for...just about everything.

Re: tranny / trasfer (best way to go)

If your truck is a long wheel base you could use a divorced 205 from a dodge and then no matter what trans you decide to use you will be set. I used a 2wd nv4500 with a parking break and a doged divorced 205. it let me put disk breaks on the burb with out using the caddy calipers so I saved some cash and if I ever decide to go to an auto no big deal dont have to worry a bout what trans works with what transfer case.
