Wood Bed Question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I just bought a 72 C10 and it has a wood bed in it. My question is: what years and models came with wood beds? is the wood bed on my truck original or was it a replacement. The option sheet in the glove box is gone so I don't know much about what the truck came with originally.

Hey, comgratulations on the new purchase! All 67-72s pickups (stepsides & fleetsides) could come with a wood bed in them, and fleetsides could also be had with a steel bed. The pickup most likely came with a wood bed, but there's no telling whether it's the original wood or not. I think the original wood beds were pine and they were painted, so if yours is a nice oak bed that's clear-coated then it's not original. Enjoy the new ride.

Thanks for the info. I'll post some pictures on Monday when I get back to work.

I'm guessing that the wood that is in the bed now is not original. It is pine and weathered some, but no where near as bad as something that would have been original. It really doesn't matter as I plan on replacing it with oak. Any advice on how to treat the new wood to make it last as long as possible?

Well, at least you got wood strips!

When I bought my truck, the previous owner just laid a piece of 4x8 sheet of plywood, and SCREWED it down!!! (through the metal) The wood is pretty old, as it's weathered real bad. When I bought the truck, the previous owner was using it as a garbage can! The box was full of crap. I plan on tearing the truck down when it warms up a bit, now that I have a garage.

Stokes, about the wood being original: Being in Idaho, a wood bed could hold up pretty well for a long time. Just last weekend I ripped out an original wood bed from a '72 longstep; it was a Texas truck (by the gulf) and the rest of the truck was pretty rotten, but there were still some pretty healthy boards in the bed. Some wood beds seem to hold up pretty well. Has it ever had a camper top on it?

But like you said, it doesn't matter.

Just shooting the bull about wood beds. Good luck with the oak replacement. And yes, I wanna see pics!

I bought the bed for my 70 GMC from Texas, and the wood was pretty rough. I guess it all depends on how the previous owners treated them? I'm replacing mine with oak wood and stainless hardware. The wood needs a final sanding and polishing. I used Marine Polyurethane to cover the wood. Great UV rating and stands up to water? Here's a pic of what the wood lookes like now.

I painted mine black and used the stainless strips and side angles. Also capped the ends and stake holes.

GMC= Got More Class! 1970 GMC LWB, Fleetside, 350/4spd, Flowmaster "40's", 2002 GMC 16" Rallies, cowl hood,and added a bunch of options that weren't there when I started.
