getting rid of wing/vent windows

i was wondering if anyone has any info on converting doors with vent (wing) windows into non vent window doors. i have a 52 3/4 ton 5 window and im looking to get rid of the wing windows. Im curious about what needs to be done to do this. are the doors basically the same from 47 to 53 were i would be able to get the runners and hardware out of a door with out the wing windows and put them in my doors.

thanks in advance

Re: getting rid of wing/vent windows

I got a set of '50 doors that I'm using for my '54 for the same reason. The '54-55 1st series are different from the rest of the AD doors as the handles and strikers were diferent. That didn't affect me as I went with the Bear Claw latch system anyway. My '54 started as a 3600 3/4 ton long bed and now resembles a 3100 sb. From what I've gathered, it seems to be easier to swap doors than re-gut the factory ones. It can be done, just more time/labor intensive. There may be some threads on this as I know it's been done before. Did you try a forum search? Good luck and keep us posted...... Daniel U

Re: getting rid of wing/vent windows

I bought a set of 1950 doors to put on my 51, they bolt on & would work, but they fit the opening so bad compared to the original doors, I elected to keep the vented doors. Now that my truck is done, I feel the wing windows better match the split windshield. (just personal tastes)

Re: getting rid of wing/vent windows

Funny you should mention this. My brother's having a similar issue with my mom's '54 even though they are all '54 doors. The factory had really sloppy tolerances for these "farm/work trucks". The guy doing my body work spent a good week insuring every panel fit properly. When finished, the fitment will be much better than back in '54 when she rolled off the assembly plant in Los Angeles.

Try going to www.nolimit.net ,or click here: http://www.nolimit.net/prodinfo.asp?number=GLS%2D4754 , and try this out for size. This is what I intend on doing for my truck, a 53 GMC panel truck since I have already shaved my doors handles and the doors are in damn nice shape... to good to justify buying new ones and doing all the work again that is!
