Dynamat vs other

OK I've got to put something on the walls of the cab of my sons truck to keep them from rattling when he cranks his system up. The question is... how good is all the other brands of sound deadener vs dynamat?

I've priced dynamat and a couple more, the problem is I can't find anything I really like locally, and the ones I've found online including dynamat will require buying at least two packs to cover just the back of the cab.

I don't really have a problem buying it that way I just want to cover all my bases and be sure there's not something better out there first.

Any thoughts or comments? what have you guys used?

You used to hear alot of good things about brown bread. But seldom hear it mentioned any more. I don't know why. I've never used any such material although it is in the plans for my 68... some day.

I used Brown bread on the doors of my 77 Cheyenne. Just lining inside the doors and the back of the door panels made a huge difference, It is well worth the money spent. I think they changed the name of Brown Bread, but I'm not sure what it is now.

i would really look into the brown bread , you would have to search back wuite a ways but at one time there were several posts on it and the guys using it said that dynamat didnt even come close to this stuff , they said it was amazing the results they got

i've used Fatmat in two different vehicles with excellent results and cheaper than dynamat.

Brown Bread is no more. It has been replaced by B-Quiet Ultimate. I tried to find the Brown Bread a few weeks back and was told by the company that made it (B-Quiet) that it was upgraded to a better product and so the name changed.

I too had a difficult time deciding which way to go, I finally did the B-Quiet Ultimate. They claim to be better than Dynamat, who knows, they all say they are better than the compitition. I got mine on Ebay. Dynamat was $122 shipped for 36 sq ft compared to 50 sq ft of B-QU for $120 shipped. They claim to stick better than Dynamat as well. Dynamat is .067 mil thick whereas B-QU is .060 mil thick. B-QU claims to have a 37db-39db reduction in noise levels if used through out the entire cabin area. I just finished installing the B-QU from the bottom of the windsheild to the back wall. I need about 20 sq ft to finish off the rest of the cab. So far I am impressed with how it laid out and how well it is sticking.

Also, beware of some of the other take offs...I was told that they are actually used for roofing and do not work for crap. They said some of the stuff is actually tar based and can create a big mess and have little to no sound deadening qualities.

If you look at the link in my post above you will find links to independant studies by Audio magazines that show B-Quiet Ultimate (Brown Bread) out performs many of the more expensive competitors.

There are a couple of liquid options to consider for areas that are hard to reach. I haven't done much research there, but one of them is called Lizard Skin (I think)...

I just finished installing my B-Quiet Ultimate (Replaced Brown Bread...Better). I put duct tape on some of the seams just to keep it off of my clothes when I was working in there. Very easy to lay down and to form. Sticks EXTREMELY well, especially when it is hot out. I used sissors because a utility knife was harder to do and I did not want to score my etching primed floor.

If you haven't done it yet, do inside the doors too. Put as much as you can on the inside of the outer door skin, and do the back of the door panels too.It will make your doors soooo much quieter.

That is going to be the next thing to do, I HATE rattling doors. Good idea on the door panels too, would have not thought of that

I also put my carpeting down just to see what it looked like against the Orange. It is not yet installed, I need to get a roll and lay it down up on the firewall and the rear wall first.

When you get your doors done, here's a fun test. Tap on your fender with your finger right in front of the door. Now tap on the middle of the door. The difference in sound is amazing...

There is one other option that I haven't seen mentioned. It is Polymeric Mastic from McMaster Carr. It has the same specs as Dynamat and is substantially cheaper. I used it on my street/strip Nova and worked great but does have an slight asphalt odor initially.

great article here. tons of info on each of the different types of material. based on the info here, i think going with a Butyl mat is the best option. especially if you're going up the back wall of your cab and/or your firewall. I'd hate to have the stuff melt away and leave a pool of goo under my carpet.

mike, do you have an estimate of how many sq ft it took you to do cover the area you covered?

I bought a 50ft roll and I was able to do from under the windshield to the back wall. I have enough for one strip accross the back wall but that is it. I would need enough for one more pass along the back wall and for inside the doors. I would think that 70ft would be enough to do the complete cab.

I used Dynamat and I bought it from Summit. I am very happy with the results and I don't see how anything could stick any better. I just hope I never have to remove it. Whatever you end up using be careful of the edges on the aluminum backing after you cut it. It's razor sharp. Chris

One quetsion i had is what are you putting to cover the bquiet up? I know the carpet on the floor will cover up the floor, but what about the side panels? Are you going to carpet those also or are you going to let it just hang out there???

I did my doors with that stuff (brown bead) and MAN!! What a difference! Doors sound SOLID when you shut them!!

I will make some kick panels for the sides for the 4" Boston Acoustics speakers I have and cover them in carpet. All of the B-Quiet Ultimate will be covered in either carpet or leather.
