Front Wheel Bearing Pre-load Torque - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Okay, so I do not have ready access to my repair manuals (actually not sure what box to look in right now), so I thought I would ask a simple one...

What is the pre-load torque for front wheel bearings on my '86 2wd. Looking to replace the brake callipers, hoses and bearings this weekend. The rest of the stuff I can do without any manual, but I would like to get the bearing torque right.

i didnt know there was a torque setting for the wheel bearings i can look but what i did was went by feel if the wheel didnt spin freely i loosed tell it gor right then i put the cotter pin in.

I agree, I would just go by feel..usually would tighten it down snug and then back it off slightly until the wheel would just start turning freely.

Makes sense to me - thanks. I just tought I would check. I guess I'm too used to working on the front auto-locking hubs of our Pathfinder. The book has specific intial "pre-load" torque (around 75 ft/lbs I think) to seat the bearings and then back off and reapply around 1 lb/ft (or basically hand tighten) and lock the retaining nut.

I think the 2wd is simpler...

Been told im nuts to bring it back from the dead (still going to happen) plans-all stock with a turbo 292 inline 3 speed column shift. and thats it big block 427 and 5 speed trans and ford 9 inch theyhave no home yet thinking what to put them in and a 79 c60 trash truck um no idea i have one
