Ok guys I have a 67 short step with a 69 camaro 350 engine and manual steering. So I went to a local junkyard and found a power steering gearbox out of a 75 truck, I didn’t need a pump cuz the camaro engine has one on it. Soooo I got the old gearbox out and the new one in its place with no probs I hooked up the fluid lines and then the belt to the pump. I prime it and when I turn the wheel it makes a loud wining noise, I think it is coming out of the pump. Everything works fine but the noise and then as soon as I turn the engine off steering fluid shoots out of the top of the cap on the pump, A lot of it to. Where do u think my problem lies fellas? Is it a pump, gearbox, or just an obstructing in one of the lines?

You have air in the pump, the gear box, and the lines. Jack up the front of your truck. Start it and slowly turn all the way left and all the way right. You will need to do this for some time. You are burping the system. The more air that works it's way out the less it will puke out of you pump.

so does it sound like all my parts r good? and when I "burp" the system do i need to have the cap on or off the pump?

take the cap off and fire the truck up. it night make a godawful noise for a bit but it should start to quiet up once all the air is out of the pump. the box wont take fluid on its own u just have to mose the wheel to make it accept fluid. if u can have someone watch the pump and make sure it doesnt run dry

I've always been told to hold the wheels at the stops on left and right for one second on every turn while going back and forth...helps bleed it quicker. I don't know how much/if it helps...it's the only way I have done it.
