What they arent icons yet? lol My family has been owning the icons since 73. I actually have compared our trucks to the tri fives for years.

Edit: I actually have the issue that this article came from. Its the august 2000 issue of sport truck. And if you can find it buy it. I have used it to answer several questions on here as well as some other magazines. Ps see post 8.

I`ve been hearing this about these trucks every few years for over 20 years,"These trucks are catching on."People forget when speaking,sometimes,that they are speaking from "their" perspective and that when they say this they are merely admitting that "they" have just "caught on".It`s been obvious to many of us that as soon as we saw the`73s come out that these trucks would become even more of a favorite than they already "instantly" were.
These trucks ARE icons and have been for several years.They are used in movies,tv,ads as much or more than any other vehicle.Every toy company makes some sort of replica of them.You can buy about any part you could need for them.And,if it`s not made,it will be.Or,there`s just never going to be a need for it.
Will they ever catch up to other icons that came before?How do you measure?They`ll prolly never hit the height of status of the tri-5s because they were up and running favorites when these truck came out.By the`70s there had begun the`50s nostalgia thing and it`s been the center of car culture ever since.But,take a given time frame,and these trucks could match most vehicles in popularity.In`65 a`55 was 10 y/o and was already a much earlier looking design and a favorite classic.Well,in`82 there was just as much buzz about these trucks as that.Don`t forget these are trucks.Back a few years,everyone liked cars and some liked trucks.A car from the 67-72 time period would have had a broader following from day one.Look at the Camaro,an instant icon.These trucks did more for converting car owners than any other truck.I`m not talking about SUVs.All it took for them was adding doors to the back seat and a generation of people that want everything and they want it now.

I wonder if there are other such write ups like this on our trucks. Now to search and located a Aug. 2000 Sport Truck for my collection.

Ok I was wrong about the 6cyl replaced by v8 swap, it was in the november 1999 issue. But here are an overview of the 2 best issues of sport truck that pertain to the 67-72's.

August 2000 issue of sport truck

page 64- tailight tune up- 55-59 tail lights on a 67-72 step side.

page 86- Searching for gold- A guide to swap meets and scrap yards- excelt reader for people new to the hobby.

page 104- Contemporary classics- Article in the link in the first thread.

page 120- Fuelish pride- fuel pump change out on 72 big block truck.

page 134- Better Bolt on Binders- 6 lug disk kit that uses stock hub and spindle- The one I tell everybody about.


November 1999 issue of sport truck

page 50- Frequently asked electrical questions- Good basic knowldge for both carb and newer engines.

Page 59- Low Classic- A 68 lwb saved from the crusher gets a swb chassis and air ride suspension- great pics and description for all you guys who want to do air ride.

I think there is some lea-way to copywrite laws. 1) Is credit being give to the author and publication. 2) Is it being used in a non profit way. 3) Is it still being puplished, etc...
I think the copywrite laws are going after those who are trying to use anothers song, report, publication as their own for some sort of benifit. I might be wrong.
I think Sport Truck is getting great free advertising. Just my .001 cents worht.

As they say "History has a way of repeating itself.

I feel 67-72 will in fact hit if it already hasn't the status of the tri fives of the 50's. Allot of guys (old farts like me) are into the 50's stuff more so then most. There are allot of up and coming young (20 to 40 year olds) truck enthusiasts that remember these trucks (67-72) when they were young kids. They relate to this era. As old guys go to the happy hunting grounds the 50's thing will taper off to some degree and then watch these trucks (67-72) take off. It's all a matter of time but they will gain increasing popularity and prices will reflect this fact.

Icons, cult status, whatever you want to call it....I have found that these trucks "grow" on you if you didn't really care for them in the past.

I was on the island of Taiwan (68-69), then in VietNam (69-70) when these trucks were new. I remember the '67's being the new style and seeing one on the Interstate in late '66. I wasn't into trucks, at that time. When I was being reassigned from Taiwan to Tucson, I was told to get a pickup, put a camper shell on it and the senoritas would flock to me. So, I bought a 5-year old Pontiac convertible. Didn't buy a truck until I traded a '65 Econoline van for a '61 short step Chevy (in '73). Traded my '60 Impala 4-dr for another '61 Chevy, this time a long bed, step. It had been redone and was nice, but it was only intended to be in my possession for a short time....trading it to a dealer on a late-model car for my future ex-wife. Such is life.

It wasn't until my youngest son, a junior in high school, found a '69 that he wanted to check out. It was about 30 miles away. It had a straight body but it was an older restification probably done about 1990. It had a stout 350 and a 350TH with a shift kit and would bark the tires in a 2nd gear shift every time. Nothing but premium fuel would keep it from running-on or pinging. It was black and had a dark red velour interior.

So, six months later, I was bitten when I needed another truck to replace the one I was letting my oldest son buy. It was halloween, and rainy, when I went to check it out, but it was nearby. The seller thought the ad had run the previous weekend and nobody had called. So, in spite of the grey primer over white paint, I bought it. Aluminum wheels, a air cab and a 2-inch hitch receiver, plus PS and PB, sold me on it. Solid little truck, I thought. It was just a truck until I lowered it and got rid of the 2000-lb capacity rear springs, vastly improving the quality of the ride and handling.

I have grown to like it more and more, every time i drive it. Only the wife's Lexus rides/drives better....at my house. She likes it that way, too. Won't ride in the Chevy. It's her loss.

Yep, I like having an icon, even if I never become one.
