Need Help, 4x4 problems with my 1984 Sierra..

Not getting much response in the other fourm so I thought I'd try here. Im just finishing up the installation of the motor on my 84 Sierra 4X4 that I just purcashed and the motor is working great but I have run into problems with the transfer case. I am only getting low range 4x4 and can't seem to get it out of that into two wheel drive. The truck is running fine and it drives in low range but I gotta get it into 2x4 but having no luck. Im tryin to make sense of this. The 4x4 shifter seems like it is stuck and won't go ahead any further and to get into two wheel drive the shifter should go further ahead towards the dash but it's back towards the seat. You can move it into neutral but no 4 hi or 2 wheel drive. The 4 wheel drive was working fine but the truck sat for a few months with no motor so Im really stuck here. Im just new getting into working on trucks as it's my first one and if someone could give me a hand it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Which transfer case do you have?
If it's a 208, you have to move the shifter to the side to go past 'N'

I am not 100% as to which transfer case is in the truck. I guess I will have to get underneath and maybe find the part#. But I do believe it is the original case. I have tried moving the shifter to the side before but it still wouldn't budge. I will try it again tomorrow and check on the part# for further reference. Thanks a bunch for the quick response...

Thanks Cjracing15, I have put it in neutral but no go. Im quite puzzled here. Im fairly new to the 4x4 but have been working on cars for years now. I checked the fluid today and it's right where it should be and looks clean as well. Like I said it was working fine a few months ago before I bought it and I just dropped a new engine in and now im running into the complications on getting it outta low range. Im still messing with it now so hopefully something will work out. Thanks again.

I had a truck one time that would not go back in to 2wd until I put her in reverse never did figure out what was wrong with it before I sold it.

Dose your shifter look like this.

If so then you have to go to neutral and pull it to the drivers side and then froward some times it can be a pain.
This is on a 208 transfer case.

Yes CrashEd it looks like that, but only one difference, underneath the boot mine does not have that little box that goes around the boot and shifter, my boot is flush against the floor. I've been trying to pull it to the side and then shift but Im not getting ahead at all. Im almost scared that it's inside the transfer case. But it was working fine before this. I dunno if the linkage is seized or what. It's begining to be a pain as this is the last thing that is stopping me from driving the truck. Thanks for the response man!!
