Wood bed strip Question?

Hey all,
I got the Stepside bed off the truck and all torn down to start the paint and bodywork prep. The steel strip that holds the wood down that is connected to the side of the bed is rusted and I want to replace it. I have seen the new ones being sold, but can't figure out the best way to remove the old one. It looks as if it is spot welded the whole length. How do you install the new ones, especially for you polished stainless steel strip guys. Do you go back and spot weld the new ones in? Let me know what the best coarse of action is!
Thanks !
Shawn

Mine were spot welded at first, I removed them with a hammer and chisel, bad idea, got little dents now. drill the spot welds down through the strip and they should pop off rather easier. I still havent replaced them yet.

They do make covers to go over the old ones. We sell them. You can take a air hammer and chisel if you feel comfortable using one. You can drill the welds out also If you replace them with Carbon steel angle strips you can weld them on or bolt them on to the sides. If you buy stainless one they are usually bolted on to the sides but you will see the bolts. It is possible to weld the stainless to the sides but you would have to have the skill to do it.

Re: Wood bed strip Question?

Here is a link to Mar-K with info about the angle covers.

http://mar-k.com/catalog/catalog.asp...19721972CS-145

You can purchase them from us or Mar-K

On a regular stainless angle strip
I have thought about (have not done it yet) welding some short studs on the inside of the bed to bolt the strips on from the inside. Maybe weld the stud to a small thin plate from behind, then tack that to the bedside. Then the bolts won't show on the outside. it would have to be pretty thin to look ok though. I have thought about gluing them to the side also using body panel adhesive. (maybe I am nuts).

Re: Wood bed strip Question?

I air chiseled mine off then hammered and dollied the sides---about 25 spot welds from the outside holds them on nicely-----Make SURE you note which end is which---they are different from end to end.Check hole location before removing the old ones---------

MAR-K also has instructions on removing/replacing the angles:

Hope that helps!
