Question Rear brake cable measurement

I have a "72" K frame and need to know how much cable sticks out of the sheathing when the parking brake is not applyed? Hopefully some has a fairly new setup so the measurement will be accurate. I think 69-72 4X4 should all be the same. I need this measurement to get custom rear cables made up for the disc brake setup and still use the stock center cable.
Thanks, Willis

Re: Rear brake cable measurement

I have measured all 6 of mine and they are 4.5 inches plus or minus 1/8 of an inch from the end to the grove that the rubber boot fits on. All mine are stock cables.

Re: Rear brake cable measurement

That measurement`s going to vary depending on condition/age of cable and shoes/adjustment.My new pair measure 4 1/4" on driver side & 4 1/2" on passenger disengaged.Engaged it`s 4 1/2" & 4 3/4".
The originals on my GMC measured 5" disengaged.

I checked my invoice and the ones I ordered for a 6" lift were 5" over stock.

Smile Re: Rear brake cable measurement

It looks like 4 1/2" is the number I`m going to use for making up the new custom cables. hopefully I will be able to use the stock lenght center cable. Them measurments you guys gave me were from the pull side of the lead plug on the end of the cable, right? Thanks for the information Ridgeback and Special-K.

Re: Rear brake cable measurement

If the center cable is new it should self center, if its used it may already have creases in not allowing it to center. Just a thought.

Re: Rear brake cable measurement

I am out of town and do not remember if I measured to the end of the cable or the pull side. I can check in the shop late Wednesday evening and let you know.

Re: Rear brake cable measurement

My center cable is still original,so there`s a good chance that would be the case.
