Holley or Edlebrock Carb?
I am looking to buy a new carb and not sure if I should buy a Holley or Edlebrock. I am looking at a 600cfm. I currently have a rebuilt quadra jet and it idles a little high. Backed the Idle adjustment screw all the way out and it is still idleing high. I have a stock 350 with an HEI distributor and straight 2.5" pipes from the exhaust manifold back. Not looking to add a whole lot of HP. I just want a good carb that will last.
Just want to know what you guys think. |

Its a personal prefrence really...Me i dig holleys mainly cause i had my old dodge hotrod burned to the ground by a 600cfm edelbrock with a man choke..so they can kiss my a$$...ill stick with holley over the edelbrock stuff any day but thats JMHO

ryan. somethings not right with your q-jet. check the choke. you cant beat what you got in fact there not as good as the q-jet.

im just the oppisite of heavy71 chevy but you want opinion so here it goes. i have always had an edelbrock, and always had great luck with them, usally they are great right out of the box, and most come with a higher jet number than any holley, i had a 600 on my ZZ3 and loved it, but was talked into buying a 750( 500.00 dollar )holley and i did, even with a guy that knows his holleys he couldnt get it to run as good or even close to the way the edelbrock, my 600 came with a 100 primary jet a 95 secondary stock. and thats right out off the box, most holleys of the same cfm come with a 96 primary and a 92 secondary, IMO i would find someone that knows how to work on quadrajets, most people say that they suck, ( because the dont understand or know how to work on them) a good tuned quadrajet will preform as good or better than any aftermarket carb. just my 0.2 tony

I agree it personal choice I have run about everything I have a rebuilt quadra jet on my 70 chev dd it has been great from day one but my show truck has been through three carbs it has a 350 bored out with a holley street eliminator manifold and hei ignition I started out with a quadrajet then went to a holley but both had problems getting it to idle down so now I have an edlebrock that I changed the jets and rods on and put a 1 inch spacer under it and it is finnally running sweet. You may want to check your timeing some too that can make a big difference on the preformance off the line. Hope that maybe gave you an idea if not let you know your not the only one battleing their carbs.

yep, personal preferance. Mine would be, fix the Q-jet , that would be the best option. my second choice would be a small cfm Holley, no more than 600.

I am running an Edelbrock 750 Q-Jet, after having an Edelbrock 600 CFM (like the old AFB's). The Q-Jet runs much better, and leaner. Better fuel mileage and better performance. Starts easier with the divorced choke than it did when I had to use the manual choke. I don't know why...it just does.

Thanks for all the input guys...I will put some time into the one I have and see if i can get it to run better...Probably save a few bucks too

I'd buy and Edelbrock 1405 or 1406 and be done with it. Q-junks are nothing but trouble unless you are a carb expert. The Edelbrocks are effortless to adjust and you set it once and forget it. Had my last one 7 years without any major work on it.
The new Street Avenger Holleys are great as well. Same premise as the Edelbrock but with bigger jets and better performance. I don't care much for the other Holleys.

I dont know garbage when it comes to carbs ill admit it. But when my old holley carb that came on my truck went to hell I replaced it with a street avenger. I hav the street avenger tuned like a guitar. I couldnt be happier. They are simple to tune with just a vac gauge. The day I put it in my truck was spinning tires like it never did it before and that was before i got the vac gauge.

you will only down grade by going with an aftermarkey carb... have your Qjet rebuilt by someone who is good at it. I have a 600 edelbrock and it does ok now that i have had one of my friends show me a few trix be can do with it, but personally i have used or seen em all, as far as mileage and preformance for that mattter goes u can beat a QJET. they get a bad rep because most who use they are using one that has 400k on it. but if ur gonna get an aftermarket carb get an edelbrock. all around good products and if you get a holley you will learn to work and tweak on it all the time EDELBROCKS are set it and drive it kinda carbs

I've never had an Edelburp carb that was good. Every one I've ever had ran good for about three months, then PPFFTTTHH!
I finally bought a 570 Holley Street Avenger that is the BEST carb I ever bought. When buying a carb, always think smaller is better. You would be surprised how good your engine would run with a 500 2-bbl Holley. And before anyone hollers a 500 cfm carb is too small for a 350, that's what they use in circle track limited stock classes.

I got better mileage out the Edlebrock, but a lot better performance out the Holley. Overall I like the Holley

find an online CFM calculator to help you figure out what size you need....then it's personal preference. Nothing wrong with the stock Q-Jet

Several years ago I had a 1976 corvette and I was having trouble with fast idle,anyway long story short,I think it was on the passenger side of q-jet and there was a screw for adjustin the secondary like the idle screw for the primaries.Come to find out some had cranked it down and opened up the secondaries.I think it had something to with the fast idle for the choke.

fix the q jet I think it maybe a vacuum leak from the throttle plate like I explained earlyer with the bushings in the shaft its very common
