Cool Blazer Roll Bar and Spare Carrier

Need to get rid of the homemade rollbar in my 73 Blazer ( I didn't make it and I bump my head on it!!). And Looking for a swing away spare carrier.

I'd like to know if the rollbar and spare carrier is available in anyone's catalog - I've looked. I recall and outfit called Hickey, that used to make all kinds of these things. But, they seem to be out of business.

Let me know if you can...

- Dave

Re: Blazer Roll Bar and Spare Carrier

Smittybuilt still lists an interior roll bar for our blazers. But I'd say the S&W kit would be stronger. As far as a stock style swing away tire carrier that bolts to the body, I don't think anybody still makes a kit. Your best bet is looking in the boneyards for both. I've found Blazer roll bars in the stock form (73-75), the rear roll bars from 76-80 and various aftermarket bars in the boneyard. I think I've seen a couple spare tire carriers, but I've never liked how they stress the body when holding a larger than stock tire.

Your best bet on a swing away tire carrier is to look at some of the custom bumpers sold on the web through fab shops like DIY4X.com and others. They mount the swing arm to the bumper on a much heavier duty hinge than the old body mounted arms did.

No, I'm looking for a outside corner mounted swing away. I'm probably gonna get away from the 4 inch lift and go down closer to stock. (my 5' 4" wife, ya know... I'm 6' 3") So, 235/75R-15 shouldn't be too weighty.

Thanks for the ref's Zoomad. I believe you to be the sage genius about all things early Blazer!

Re: Blazer Roll Bar and Spare Carrier

No big deal. Sometimes we only read what we are thinking about....

Inside mounts, I've found are easy to find at the boneyard. The tubular style that mounts to the left rear bed rail and floor are most common. that design didn't change at all and at most you might need to put a hole in the floor, but other than that it's a bolt in affair. There was another inside mount on the early 73-74's (maybe 75 too, not sure) that bolted to the floor just behind the rear seat. This mount made the spare ride parallel to the seat, which I'd bet blocked rear vision worse than the rear side mount. Not to mention wouldn't feel all that good bouncing your noggin off of if you are sitting in the back seat and hit a bump or get in a wreck. I might have seen one of them in the boneyard. I prefer the rear side mount, but it won't fit anything over a 31" tire.
