Temp Gauge

today on my way home from school, i looked down at my temp gauge and it was maxed out!, no smoke, so i drove home, popped the hood, all the lines had water runnin through em, so i think its safe to say water pump is good and tstat aint stickin, a few hours later, the temp gauge was still half way when i started it up. when i drive it, it maxes out, so i'm thinkin its either the gauge or the sensor, i did just put white faces on my gauges, but it worked for a day after that, so anybody got suggestions before i poke around wastin my time? thanks

Re: Temp Gauge

Poss grounded out sending unit wire, or bad resistor, doubtful if it is the gauge itself, but anything is possible. You can unplug the wire from the sending unit and the gauge should read all the way cold, and if you ground it out it should read past hot. THat will test the wire and gauge.

Re: Temp Gauge

Byrd, what if you install a rebuilt dash assembly and the temp gauge pegs when it didnt on the old assembly and then you pull the wire off the sending unit and the gauge stays pegged?

Not trying to hijack your post but since byrd answered here I thought maybe he would answer...thanks

Re: Temp Gauge

speaking of highjacking where do i look for the gauge hook ups under hood and under dash, my temp gauge goes from cold to hat then to the middle and bounces like one of those red drinking birds on steroids

Re: Temp Gauge

good suggestions byrd, schools over in a few minutes, so we'll se wat happens...

and the temp gauge wire thinger goes to the sending unit which is in between and below the 1st and 2nd exhaust ports on the drivers side, at least that's were it is on both of mine. IIRC its a green wire, maybe purple, no, i think green, lol
