helper springs
any body know where I can get helper springs for my 72 with rear coils,
I want to put them on and take them of as needed. |

Hey, this is a good question. Do those helper springs fit on a swb 68 stepside with rear coils? what if the truck were lowered?

cmcolumbus: Here is a pic of what you are looking for, start looking at your local area wrecking yards for any 63-72 GM 1/2 or 3/4 ton coil rear truck and just be sure you get all of the pictured parts for your setup. Good luck hunting, Cb

Ovidiu,
The springs should technically fit on a SWB truck but you would have to modify the rear bumper brackets and drill some holes. The first picture I attached shows the location of the springs on the frame. The second shows the spring mounting holes after I cut 8" from the frame to shorten it to a 115" wheelbase. As far as a lowered truck they will not work. If you notice in the first picture, the springs hang a few inches above a rubber bumper attached to the end of the trailing arms. When the truck in loaded the helper springs come into contact with the bumpers. If the truck were lowered the springs would either be very close to the pads or in constant contact with the pads.

I've got a 68 short step with a set of helper springs that look different than those. They are a stack of 3 or 4 bands that face toward the front of the truck.
