$ Advice for 72 short step (pics) - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

This truck is near me. It was a no-sale on ebay @ $2000. I went and looked at the truck in person. Very straight, original, un-molested body. All panels fit well. It has the usual rust in the rockers and cab corners. It's a 6cyl, 3spd on the column. I offered $2300. The owner was honest and said he paid $3000 for it and didn't want to take that much of a loss. How much higher (if any) should I go? Is it worth much more than my original offer? Just curious.

I guess it depends on how much you want it... Does it have any options or is it just a basic truck? Do you want to just have a driver or build a show truck? Do most trucks you have seen in your area have the same rust?

The big plus for me is the originality, original paint, it even has the stock hubcaps. Down side is the rust, six/3-speed, and probably no options like PS or PB.

If you are looking to install a SBC/auto, A/C, and some options how much do you want in it when it is "done"???

I wouldn't pay more than $2000 for it the way it sits.

as a reference.....
I bought a 69 swb stepside with a rust free cab and bed, 84K miles, 350, 4 speed, bone stock and never touched Wyoming rig (thanks Drew67) for $3950.

your on target with $2300 for your example, but $3000 my be a little on the steep side. any optional equipment?

I'd gladly pay 2500 for it, but i'm from Canada, and swb anything is hard to find here. I don't think its a bad deal.

If it's as straight as it looks $2500 should be fair. Keep in mind that being its a 72 it already has disc brakes. 90% of the people that buy '70 and earlier trucks incur the extra expense of adding disc brakes. If he won't budge off $3000, it depends on what else you find in your area. Even if you save a few bucks on a truck elsewhere, you have to keep in mind costs of delivery, etc. If you really feel good about the truck and want it, buy it. They are gaining in value every year, and if you keep it while and improve on its condition, I don't see you losing any money on it.

I think its good buy and if you smooze him a bit I'm sure you could get it for 2700/2800 ( if you want to go that high) but I'd come up from your 2300 offer to 2500 and then let him counter you from there.

Just struck a deal on the truck! I offered $2500 he countered with $2600 - got it for $2550! I'm going to the bank tomorrow and will have the truck home by tomorrow evening. I'll post pics as soon as I can. I'm so freakin' excited!

That's great! And if I were you I would keep the six and the three speed - it gives the truck a lot of character. Have fun with it!

Sounds like you got a fair deal, and you'll be money ahead already having disk brakes up front. Had I found this board prior to buying I wouldn't have paid $2000 plus having mine shipped and then waiting 5 years to convert to disk this year. Oops, now I've told on myself

Considering where the pricing is these days on the trucks I think you did alright. Especially with the condition the truck's in. And it drives!
Don't know what your plans are for the truck but you have numerous options. You can clean it up and drive as is or run it through one of those quick paint places, Earl Schieb like for a shine up or go all the way with a complete rebuild. You did good.

Good buy I say. +1 for originality for sure. Old age is easier to fix than someone else's rigging. +1 for disc brakes as well, that was a good catch mentioning that 67_C-30... Also looks like it has the rarer no-spare driver's rear fender too if I am seeing correctly... I like 'em personally, but those are rare and more "desirable" for resale if it ever came to that.

Hey, I like it! That was a good deal! Drive it for a year or two and you will grow very fond of it. When you do start rebuilding it you will always reflect back on how much you enjoyed driving it and that will motivate you to complete the project. Looks just like my '71 stepper. I added power steering before I tore it down for the rebuild and really enjoyed that.
