have new exhaust- now I have questions

I just upgraded my exhaust to 2.5” ramhorns with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers and 2.5” pipe that exits in the back. I love the sound, but now it is too loud. I thought I would never say that, I must be getting old. What should I do? Dynomat the whole interior? Will this help even with the top off? Remove the brand new mufflers and replace with something quieter? Looking for suggestions. The exhaust is quiet on the freeway, but way to loud when I leave the stop light.

I am working on my 2 1/2" now, got a question for you. Where did you find you intermediate pipe hangers, the ones right under the seat area. I got half of it at advance auto, but can't find the rubber piece?

I plan to dump my pipes out the side by the door, but it sounds like I may be changing my mind. Are the flows really that loud?? J.

I had an exhaust shop build the pipes from manifolds to the rear bumper. All hangers are new and supplied by the shop.

I think the 40's are too loud. I heard them on a '78 swb and I loved the sound, but he had CCs and that will quiet it down a lot.

I would also run the pipes all the way over the rear axle. With them in front of the rear tire you are almost sitting right on top of the exit of the exhaust. I have 40 series flows on a duel 2.5 inch system that exits out the back and it is way to loud. Right now I have nick named my Blazer the "Thunder Wagon" based on the noise that it makes. If you want to run flows, consider the big block series, they are much quieter, but still have that deep mellow sound. I plan on running a single 3 inch using a Hooker Areoflow for a muffler. I just want something that sounds different then all the flows that are running around my area.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm almost competely maybe I don't know sold on the side exit, gotta be a way to muffle it. When I saw project copperhead I wanted my exhaust to exit like his..... Maybe the BB flows will work??? J.

A friend of mine had the same problem and he put glasspacks in front of his mufflers, sort of a double muffler setup and it quieted it down a bit, don't get me wrong it's not whisper quiet now but it's a little easier of the ears.

This the reason that I won't run Flows. I worked at a Muffler and Brake shop for
3 years part time. Personally, since it is a blazer, Dynomat will not help much. If
you have it topless then it's a moot point. There are lots of threads on here w/
exhuast help but that's a moot point now also. I would go back to the shop and
tell them it's to loud. I know of at least 3 fix options that they can offer you.

I have a custom made set of cats. going on so maybe that is the answer , thanks for the help

The mat has to help, saw one on the sema show, but can't remember the name of it. Slapped this stuff on an oringinal car and drove it to the show, awesome stuff

Having said this, gotta agree with Luv

Use the big-block flows, 50 series. They are quieter with the same sound. Also, you could try adding resonators- basically small glass packs- they will take out some of the raspiness. An h-pipe will mellow it out some too if you don't have one already.

Are you running a cross over pipe? (or an X pipe)
They take the harhness out a fair bit.

I've run 50 flows on a couple of trucks and always liked em alot.

Loud enough but at the same time quite enough...make any sense?

I'm running 50 series 3 chamber Flowmasters, an "H" pipe, and tailpipes that exit behind the rear wheels on my 2wd blazer. Just right! I have never been a fan of the 40 series 2-chamber flowmasters. Too loud for me.

I took my blazer back to the shop today and they added a 2.5" resonator on each pipe. This was the sound I was looking for. No more vibration in the cab. No more headache. This is a setup I would recommend. Thanks for all the ideas.

What does a resonator do and is it something they can add to the outside of the pipe?

A resonator is like a flow through muffler. Mine has an inside pipe that is 2.5" with holes in it that look like hood louvers (sp). Then there is a larger pipe surrounding it. It allows he exhaust to flow freely but traps the sound and cut down the vibration. We put mine right before the exhaust tips. Its about 8" long.
