bad wheel hopping
ok boys need a little help on this one....truck is a swb 67 gmc with leaf springs....7 leafs to each side so its stiff...The problem is it wheel hops, was wondering if i removed a couple of the leafs and softened it up if it would help.Have around 450hp and about 450 torque...rearend is a dana 44 with a posi.and traction bars...tremec tranny 5 speed...I know that a coil over is much better for this but was trying to get around doing the swap...any input would be great....thanks

Re: bad wheel hopping
I'm no expert but I don't think taking leaves out will help. You only have one leaf that connects to the shackle and a maybe a couple more banded to it. Axle wrap is probably the culprit. Traction bars may be the only option depending on your ground clearance.

Re: bad wheel hopping
coil overs wouldn't do jack... unless you ment a coil spring rear suspention?
Traction bars, slapper bars, lift bars, ladder bars... how much money you have to spend? How bad to you need to stop the wheel hop? |

Re: bad wheel hopping
You have traction bars, are they adjusted properly? Iirc you only want about 1/2" between the snubber and the leaf. Are the bars long enough to reach to the main leaf?
Alternative to changing to the coils, move the axle forward (redrill the spring perch) about a inch. That makes the front side shorter and stiffer and allow the back part of the spring to work (like old super stock springs). IMHO don't remove any leaves to reduce wheel hop. Does it have the problem on both asphalt and concrete? Might check to make sure every thing is tight on you rear end mounting points. Just rattling on.... hope something helps. Lee

Re: bad wheel hopping
On my old drag car I removed the spring retainer clip on the side behind the wheel and added them to the front side it helped the chassis load by letting the rear of the springs spread open . I have a leaf spring rear in mine but suffer no wheel hop!! Hope this helps. By the way do you know what spline the axels are in the 44 my rear is a 44 also. I need a posi. but don't know what spline the axels are !! Any help would be appreciated!!!

Re: bad wheel hopping
You may very well need to put some stiff shocks on it to help control the hop.

Re: bad wheel hopping
I helped a freind a while back... we took out the over load spring (the 3/4 in thick short spring on the bottom) and let the tires down.... get it to grab and stay hooked... the back lowered about an inch when we took out the spring....and road better to... it helped a ton... then he put an oooold set of slapper bars on it and then it was great just my $.02

Re: bad wheel hopping
something else you can do is extend your perches to contact more spring this will help a bit we do it on off road stuff a lot, or cut down an extra overload sping thats about 3 inches longer than the perch on each side and put that inbetween your perch and springs we did this on my yota and it almost completely stopped the wrap and hop even with 5.29 gears and dual tranfer cases
