aftermarket tailgate

im getting an aftermarket tailgate for my 78. ive looked all over for a 77-80 style tailgate but cant find one that aint beat up or rusted out at the bottom. so aftermartket it is. ive used many aftermarket doorshells fenders and patch panels on these truck with very little trouble. but im pretty sure the tailgate will want to bend if i put some weight on it. i was wonderin if i was to spotweld the two halfs together in the recesed area like they was from factory would that make it stronger. thats just an idea i had since i heard the arent spot welded their like GM gates were.

Re: aftermarket tailgate

I am getting an aftermarket tailgate from my supplier for my Crew Cab (it is beat and broken and dented) I will let you know how it turns out. Hopefully it will be here in a week.

Re: aftermarket tailgate

i got the tailgate put on today and it fit pretty good and was also spotwelded in the middle. the top of it was alittle more rounded of than the factory ones but it plenty good for my daily driver. i could also sit on it without it bending. but if more than one person was to sit on it i think it would bend. so im thinking if i was to take some metal pipe of some kind and cut it to fit so i can slide it in threw the hole in the side were the latch bolts and spot weld it to the top of the gate through the back it would stiffin it up a bunch. u think somthing like that would keep it from bending if there was a bunch of weight on it.
