What's it worth? - no title
I'll try to make a long story short. I bought a '72 K10 SWB off of eBay a few months ago. Once I got it home I found that the title didn't match the numbers on the truck. After going back and forth with the seller, they couldn't afford to buy the truck back, so eBay's auction insurance is paying me back for the truck. Normally, they said, they would take posession of the truck and resell it. In this case, since we haven't found a way to get a good title for the truck, they can't sell it, so I get my money back and get to keep the titleless truck.
I don't have a use for an off-road only truck, so I'd like to sell it. Any ideas on what it's worth as an off-road only or parts truck? Stats: '72 K10 SWB - 3/4 ton cab 350 with Edelbrock intake manifold and Quadrajet carb 3.73 gears 15x10 wheels with 33" tires Power steering and brakes I've inspected the differentials, both are clean with no gear wear. Doesn't burn oil, I haven't checked the compression yet, but can if anyone is interested. The speedometer and lights work.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
I think that its likely that you can get a title (with a bit of work) from your state, or the state where it came from by digging throught the DMV web sites, finding forms, info etc. Also, there are title service companies that can get you a title for a fee.
It seems that a lot of people (at least in my area) think that if a title is lost (not the case here), or gone for whatever reason, a new title can't be obtained. As long as the vehicle is not stolen, and nothing illegal is being attempted, its not that tough to get a title. |

Ditto on the title. Do a web search, there are companies for a couple hundred you can get a title.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
Here in Oklahoma you can get a "Title 42" which is a clear title on a vehicle that you have a lien on, you have to fill out an affidavit, showing the amount of the lien. You can claim work and parts you have in the vehicle and storage fees of $8.00-$15.00 per day. The notice gets published in the news paper and if no one claims the the vehicle and pays you for the lien, you get a clear title. You will of course have to have the vin run for stolen. There are folks here who charge about $50.00-$60.00 to do all this for you. I would check with the local tag office, or DMV and see what you need to do in your area. AS long as it is not stolen, there should be no problem, if it is stolen, you haven't lost anything and the cops will have a good lead on the thief. It will be worth alot more with a clear title than what it will cost you to get one.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
Thanks for the advice. I have spent lots to time with both the Texas DMV (where the truck came from) and the Louisiana DMV (where I live). In Texas, it's possible to get a bonded title, but since Louisiana does not honor bonded titles, I couldn't transfer it here.
I've had some people suggest getting a salvage title. From what I've found, that required having a statement of loss from the insurance company and the original title to the truck. I have neither. I've got a friend here that may be interested in it for a parts truck, or I may just put it back on eBay. As a side note, I've also got a '65 Mustang project I'm working on. I have yet to find a forum for Mustangs that is as informative and helpful as this one is for these trucks.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
see if you can find some vins in local junkyards and check to see if they are clean and then transfer it to your truck. some one told me they did that before. not exactly sure though. just my 2 pennies

Re: What's it worth? - no title
As long as its not a stolen truck, which I'm sure by now you'd know if it was, you could sell it a state like here in Alabama or Georgia that doesn't require titles on vehicles older than 1975. How much are you asking for it?

Re: What's it worth? - no title
I just Googled the following and got quite a number of hits for title services...
title service vehicle Since the DMV technique doesn't appear to be working you might try a service. |

Re: What's it worth? - no title
How long did it take to get ebay to help/pay?
I would not offer it back on ebay after getting paid for it. I don't know what you paid but I bet you would do well parting things out, good luck. |

Re: What's it worth? - no title
That's what i'm thinking. It would really be a shame to have to junk it out. Really don't see very many '67 through '72 Chevy 4x4's around any more. Man i wish i lived closer to you. I'ld grab that thing in a heart beat.

In AR, the process is very easy. I just brought my VIN to the DMV and they mailed me a new one 2 weeks later.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
dose your titel not match the cab or the frame? does it match at least one i would say if it matches the frame your good to go, in many states cabs are concidered replacable body parts. in others vin on cab must match title. i would think the worst you would have to do is swap cabs for one with a title . i would not be affraid of it at all if the title matched my frame

Another option is to get a "Bonded Title". This is also something done through your DMV. They should have a department that deals with this stuff and they will tell you what you need to do to make it happen. My younger brother just bought a '72 Chevy, from a guy here in central Arkansas, and it doesn't have a title. Guy he bought it from said it came from Georgia or Alabama and that because of its' age, it doesn't HAVE to have a title. Excuse me, but that is exactly the wrong thing to tell me if you want ME to buy it. Seems to me that there was a post on here several months ago in which someone had bought a truck that came from Alabama and tried to license it in Oklahoma with the title that came with the truck, only to find that the VIN had already been used in Tennessee....or something to that effect. In my brother's case, the vehicle came with a letter from a lawyer that allowed this truck to be registered and licensed in Arkansas. I would not have bought it, but that's just me.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
I had that problem in Kansas a couple years ago, I bought a SWB 4x4, got it home and realized it had a 2wd vin and title. I had to get a lawyer to file it with the courts, cost me $250. Made sure it wasn't stolen. They did all the paper work with courts, then I had to go to the Ks Highway patrol and they took off the old 2wd vin plate placed a New vin plate on the truck. Cost $10 to have them do that. So I had $260 in my truck and it wa all legal.

Re: What's it worth? - no title
I agree with everyone else. Talk to the people DMV. Especially if eBay has reimbursed you. Right now you pretty much have a FREE truck. Spending a couple hundred or so getting a proper title won't be bad at all. Having a running and driving 72 4x4 and only being out a couple bills for it....I'd do that in an instant

Re: What's it worth? - no title
i've been down that road you're on before, and you'll get no satisfaction from the louisiana DMV. in my case the previous owner died and never got the title in his name and the previous owner died before him, hence i became the third owner without a title and no help from DMV so............... i bought a body with a title (plentiful and cheap here - LWBs only) and told the DMV that the frame was bent and that i have another one. i took the new frame to the state police local office to get a new vin stamped on the frame to match the cab. hope you get some satisfaction somehow, heck i know guys that have driven their trucks for years with mismatched numbers as a result of building trucks from numerous parts, and never gave it a second thought, and neither has the DMV.
oh yeah, i did have a notarized bill of sale.

I would just file the abandon vehicle paper work and get a salvage title and call it a day. Ar least that way you get it legal.
