newbie first ? which axle pics added

Hey guys I'm new here and just have to say WOW this is a cool place. I am hoping to get started on my 47 5 window soon but for now it is collecting parts, I have my tci weld in front crossmember and air ride triangulated four link for the rear so far, but I need to get a rear end for it. What do you guys suggest the 9 inch or the camaro 10 bolt? Just so you know the plans for the truck are to bag it and make it lay flat on the ground.

Re: newbie first ? which axle

You will have an easier time welding your triangulated 4 link to the 9 inch because of the 1 piece rear housing, also cheaper/ easier to change gears in the 9" because it can be done on the bench. For the above reasons, I suggest the 9"

Re: newbie first ? which axle

Welcome hope you enjoy your build. Either should work fine if you can find a deal you may consider the Ford 8.8 rear axle it is pretty tough unless you are pushing mega HP. There were a bunch of the Ford 8.8 that came with disk brakes. This is what I used on my project found the rear axle locally for $56. You can check out some photos of the rear axle here. http://www.tagworld.com/azmark

most junk yards will have ford 8.8 rears with discs already on them. most are limited slip and decent gears too.

Highlow my rear axle came out of a 1986 T-Bird turbo coupe 3:73 gear limited slip it is 59 1/2 inches wide almost exactly the same width as the original. One problem with these is they have 4 bolt lugs bought new hardened axles and adapter plates so I could use common Ford Mustang disk brake parts. Mustang calipers etc are dime a dozen compared to the turbo coupe ones. The place for these parts was http://www.northracecars.com/index.html ask for Richard he is a great guy he helped me thru all of this.

Let me know if you need more info.

Re: newbie first ? which axle

I've got a chevy 10 bolt w/ disks, works great, nice width, chevy bolt pattern, from a 3rd gen camaro, '84 I think. But Ford 9 in looks like the sh@t, like a 350 motor, or a MII sus, or a 700r4. I went with the 10 bolt because I had it, but a
Ford 9 in is what I wish I had.

Re: newbie first ? which axle

My entire power train is from my '84 Z/28 that state Farm totlaled. It will even be TPI when I'm done! My 10 bolt will be plenty stong as I never plan to tow. It has disc brakes 'cause the PO of the Z/28 dropped an '87 rear in it with 3:73 and an Auburn posi.

Re: newbie first ? which axle

hey is the 59 1/2" measurement for the rear axle outside of drum or inside of backing plates? what would be the best donor vehicle for a perfect fit 9"? I got a guy wanting to do a trade and he is willing to find me the right 9" if I give him some idea what to look for. any help would be great guys

Re: newbie first ? which axle

I have a 1973 Chevy 8.5 posi 10 bolt with 3:42 gears. A 72-81 gm 8.5 rearend will handle good power just fine. The thing about 9 inch that is desirable is the pumpkin drops out as a unit and the axel are not retained with c-clips (the ford 8.8 does have c-clips). I also think that the Ford 8.8 are lower priced the Chevy big 10 bolt. I brought mine on craigslist for 200 bucks. I believe other the the Grand Nationals Chevy did not use the 8.5 after 82, they used 7.5 rearends.
