Just bought a 1972 Longhorn - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Well I have been reading here for a few days and just got accepted to the forum. Now I would like to post my great find and get some advice.

I found a 1972 Longhorn for sale for $700. Went and saw it and it didnt look to bad. There is rust on the rocker panels and floor board and of corse the wood bed is totally rotten. There is a few other rust spots but not much. The engine is a 350 and to odometer reads 46000 so im guessing its 146000. The right side head is taken off and the left side valve cover is off. In all it doesnt look horrible.

My main question is should i rebuild the engine or look into getting a 350 crate engine for the truck?

welcome to the forums, thats not bad at all for the money you paid..we all started somewere...as far as the motor, its more of a cost comparison. its whatever is cheaper for you, or the best for you, if u like working on motors rebuild it, and rebuild it and customize it the way you want, if not. throw a crate in there

Welcome to the board!!!
If you are familiar with engines you can build one for yourself.Especially if you already have the tools(they can get pricey)There's nothing like firing up an engine you built for the first time.On the other hand a crate can be had for a good price and there is a warranty.

Well some friends and I started on the truck.

We pulled the other head off and by the looks of the inside it doesn't look to have been sitting much more than a year. We are going to pull the block and trans tomorrow after school then we are going to take the heads and everything to school and clean them and magflux them. A friend out mines dad rebuilt engines a lot and he said it may not need to be rebuilt but we just need to mic it all.

I think I am going to make everything as close to original as possible. It will need a new carb though. Any ideas?

as far as the engine goes, to me, if they original motor has not been rebuilt, or only has once. id rebuilt. if not orginal motor id get a create motor. but it sounds like the one you have will be fine!

Well I have found out that my uncle has a LS1 engine that has a iron block with aluminum heads. The engine come out of a ambulance here is Houston that the fire department didnt care how they ran it. So the had detonation and it needs new pistons.

So most likely I will put that engine in there.
