Need new carb, no time to rebuild or take to a carb place.

First I'd like to say I know the consensus is that when looking for a carb for a stock engine you are best off rebuilding the stock rochester, but I havent got the time to rebuild, or even to take into a carb shop, I need somthing that I can drop in, plug all the hoses in and start the truck up.Unfortunately I'm not that motor savvy, so I haven't got a clue as to figuring out all the info needed to get a good carb. I have a Goodwrench crate 350, and an edelbrock performer intake model number 3701. My current rochester carb is at the end of the road I think, and I'd like to replace it with somthing of high quality. Here is a link to the sbc I have, mine is about 10 years old though:

The current carb is a Rochester model E4ME, and it has all the vacuum and smog junk on it, so I think I'm going to need another carb that is smog legal. Here is a picture of the current carb in its sad state:

If you are subject to california smog checks, I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how hardcore they get about making sure every last thing under your hood is stock.

Now if they aren't going to verify that the carb that originally came on the truck or an exact replacement is on it, then you could bolt on an Edelbrock 1406, tune it to run clean, hook up all the necessary vacuum hoses so everything else works, then hope you pass the tail pipe test. I'm guessing you could just leave the connector for the carb disconnected, not sure if that will throw a check engine light though.

Why the hurry ? Is there something seriously wrong with the carb thats keeping you from driving the truck ?

Even bolting on an Edelbrock 1406 is not so simple. Your stock throttle and kickdown brackets won't work so you will need some kind of aftermarket solution.

The Edelbrock 1406 is a good solution when not subject to emissions laws, but the whole California smog deal keeps me from giving you a good answer.

Well the last place i went for a smog check didnt even pop the hood. but If I were to get a carb that eliminated a lot of the vacuum things I think I would get lost trying to remove them, I get really confused looking under the hood, its just about the only weak spot for me when working on cars. The reason I am in a hurry is because I need this truck to drive to work its all i've got.

The major automotive parts chains should be able to get you a remanufactured replacement for your stock Q-jet, even if its a late model -- Holley does a lot of the work on these and they have Q-jet replacements too, but im not sure about the smog generation stuff- (i know they are different from region to region, but a few are Checker, Advance, O-Reilly's, Auto-Zone, Napa, PepBoys, among others
)

Ive had pretty good luck with rebuilt Quadrajets from Autozone. Some people refer to these carbs as Quadrajunk but I can't see anything wrong with them. They do the job for stock apps. Just get the # off the side and order.

I'm not sure what all that smog stuff entails, but I can't think of anything else on the carb besides ported and manifold vacuum, which your typical edelbrock or holley will have.

My truck came with a Holley remanufactured Q-Jet and it seemed to be a real good carb. The previous owner installed it and I'm assuming it was bought at a chain store. I would look into getting a reman. I'm not sure how much they cost since I've never bought one but it wouldn't hurt to check. The advantage is that it will swap right in and run right provided you got the right carb.

wow napa wants 500 for a reman of my exact carb, I'm thinking of goin with a SMI built carb, he told me 450 and it will be made specifically for my engine.

Cool, let me know about the quality of the carb. Eventually I'm upgrading my Eddy to a Qjet or something else. The ZZ4 is probably not performing at peak power with the Eddy.

I have a hard time believing a 650 or 750 Edelbrock AFB isn't enough for a 350. Did you just bolt it on or have you tuned it with metering rods and jets? Just wondering what you didn't like about the carb.

I have yet to take out the ZZ4 with the Eddy. I do have a 750 Eddy a friend let me borrow. If I feel the 650 is not enough then I'll bolt on the 750. The 650 will be tuned with a vacuum guage. The issue is the secondary throttle plates. Vacuum secondaries are superior to linkage. Eddys are designed to open the secondaries at 60% throttle. Vaccum secondaries open when the engine needs the fuel. I managed to get 18 MPG on the previous engine. I'm not sure what to expect with a ~360-365 HP engine. I'll have fun trying though. Soon enough the truck will be at the track to find out. The Eddy is a great carb for the non mechanic guy. I like them and recommend them.
