grille/headlight bezel swap

I've got a '79 and I want to go to the older style where the signal lights are separate from the headlight bezels.

I've got the proper headlight bezels for the swap but after trying to put them on it seems I will need to get the lower part of the grille surround as well.

What else will I need to complete the swap? Is any of the sheetmetal different? or is the lower part of the grille surround on a '79 just covering the old style sheetmetal?

Re: grille/headlight bezel swap

All you need is the front valance and matching bezels.

This is correct, but be forwarned that the 73-78 headlight bezels are only reproduced in plastic. The lower valance is available from most of the forum vendors. I bought mine through Capt Kaos and highly recommend Chris as he is quick to respond as well as keep you informed along the way.

Re: grille/headlight bezel swap

Well I've already got a decent set of bezels that I picked up at the wrecker for $10, just need to go back on the weekend and pick up the lower part of the grille surround I guess.

From what I've read, swapping to a 73/74 grille is a little more involved, requiring some different brackets?

Re: grille/headlight bezel swap

I remember back when I had a 73-74 Cheyenne Super grill with a 78 headlight bezel setup. Those were the days.

Does anyone else like the 1980 square headlight setup? I have a strange attraction to it for some reason. Maybe i'm just a sucker for the rare stuff.

Done!

I still plan on blacking out the headlight buckets on these ones too, now I need a different grille of some sort. I really like the 73-74 ones.

Re: grille/headlight bezel swap

Oh I don't plan on buying a new one, I'll be going with whatever I find at the junkyard. Theres a '73 out there, but no grille. I might take all the brackets though.

It's a pretty big wrecker that puts new cars out every sunday, so hopefully I'll get lucky.

Re: grille/headlight bezel swap

my dad had just found a 73 NOS grille that he paid $50 for and installed and it was MINT

A couple weeks after he got it i was helping him change his spark plugs and while climbing out of the engine compartment i stepped on the bottom lip of it and broke a chunk out of it!! i felt horrible...
