Throw out bearing location - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I realize this is a really stupid question but I can't figure out where the throw out bearing goes on the shaft and which direction it faces. Does the portion that the fork fits into face the motor or the tranny? What part catches the prongs on the clutch assembly? I have my motor out putting a new one in and did not look close enough when I pulled the old motor.

The larger diameter end goes toward the clutch forks.

i wish i had taken pics when i just recently replaced my throwout bearing, but he (71tahoe) is right...

i had thw damndest time replacing my throwout because on my tranny (sm465) it was really loose on the input shaft. took me some time to figure out that there is (supposed to be) a retainer sleeve on the shaft that was not there. mine was a clean break off my reatiner so i had no idea it was supposed to be there!!

Thanks all. That is exactly what I needed. I know I would have put it in wrong without the help.

Chev74, I almost missed the pilot bearing as well. This is a new rebuild and so it wasn't in there. Fortunately I have been meticulous at comparing the motors to make sure I am not missing anything.
