Stock Gas Tank

Well we are about a week away from being turn key ready. Would like to have it ready for the Turkey Run in Daytona, but still too much to do. ANYWAY, my question is about cleaning out the OEM gas tank. Are there any home remodies that any one suggest. Right now, it smells like varnish. Are there any chemicals that I can use. I'm not sure of any rust. When I got it last year, the guy said he didn't think there was rust. He just said to clean it out.

Is this something I can do? Should I leave it to the pros (local rad shop) $165.00 including a liner (do I need a liner?) or should I by a new one? Say LMC , etc. I took a Blazer tank out, I wanted to keep the cab tank.

you can use muriatic acid (lowes home depot poolsupply)slosh it around then rince well with water and inspect for rust. you need to have the sender out when doing it also get a new oring to seal it when reinstalling it//if there seems to be alot of rust you can get the tank sealer from an autobody paint supply one of the best i've used is made by POR15

I strongly disagree unless you don't care about the fit. The aftermarket one I got from LMC would only line up on 3 bolt holes. I say reline you existing tank.

I am going to check around. See if I can call a few more shops and get more prices. If the tank is not rusted, can I eliminate lining or is that necessary. I have heard stories of where the lining has separated. I do agree about the fit. I am a big fan of saving the OEM parts, especially sheet metal. The back panel of my step side bed is swiss cheese on the bottom - I'm cutting just above the last bolt hole and will bend the 90 degree that the wood sits on and weld in the new piece because it's gonna be 14 gauge sheet metal not reproductive 18 or 20.

I agree with keeping original, that is the way all of mine are and why I have been collecting tanks as I find them (have at least 4 extra so far). Usually they are okay if they were from running trucks and they kept them fairly full of gas.

I have heard those stories about liners too and would be afraid too. The last shop I talked to couldn't guarantee it to stick.

BAD NEWS! Just took the sending unit out and what a pile of rust. The tank also showed signs of rust just by looking in the hole. Back to the drawing board. Question, I have that poly Blazer tank. Any good ideas of where a filler neck could go - possibly hidden say under the wood?

If you were closer I would trade you one of mine for the blazer tank.

Some have put the filler neck under the bed floor, under the drivers bedside rear marker and saw one recently where it came up through the rear stake hole by the tailgate.

mine was full of rust and my truck has been sitting for a while. my carb is in bad shape as a result. I just ordered the blazer tank for it, so I can move it under the bed.

Thats what I'm going to do but since I have a step side - wood bed, I didn't want all of the gas spillage. I want to figure out how to hide the filler neck, possibly under the wood.

you might check a local boat supplier to get the same thing for less money and no shipping charges

Are you going to make this a top mount. The Blazer tank I have, is on the side at a 45 degree angle. Can I put that on the top? If so, I'll be able to cover the tank by the wood. I can possibly hinge the 2 boards over the fill cap so I can have access. What are you planning on doing?

It is a lot harder for us. I just don't have the effort to put into it right now.

Done Deal! That's what I'm gonna do. The last thing I wanted to do was go through the wood for filling. I told my son that gas will destroy the wood in no time. I told him that I didn't care how careful he was, your gonna spill it.

I plan on placing the filler on the side by the rear side marker. I should be able to run the hose under the bed and behind the fender well. I don't have the tank yet, so this is just how I picture it in my head

Hey myoldchevytruck, Remember, you still have to let the tank vent if you have a carb. You will still need a breather hole somewhere or it will vacuum lock. The original cap from the truck provided that vent. That filler neck would look killer but is sealed. Perfect for fuel injected type. The boat caps are very tasty as far as custom. I do like the looks.

thanks for the info. there is already a vent hose on the tank. the previous owner used this tank but had a nasty filler neck set up. I had my eye on the OEM tank but due to major rust in the tank, will now put it behind the marker light on the drivers side.

I saw a set-up in a rod magazine a while back.It was billet and available for wood beds only.It hinged one of the floor boards so that it flipped up to get to the filler.I wish I still had a link but I lost it in a 'puter crash.
