How I picked up 150 horsepower for $5...or the secret governor kids won't get!!!

I just bought this nice little 71 swb 4x4 pu: 350/350, QJET, 3:07s, skinny tires, dual exh and runs great...but, it wouldn't go over 65 mph-top speed.
It was not driven much so:
1. I changed the carb filter (lots of rust & dirt). That didn't do it.
2. I checked the lines into & the pickup tube size. Ah ha---small 5/16 six cyl lines had been used to change the tank...but wait, there's more!
3. Look at the filter added to the bottom of the pickup tube, inside the tank, where the sock would be. I am sure it seemed like a good idea to someone at one time...but, notice the size of the openings in & out on the filter. They are just UNDER 3/16"!!!! They didn't even trim the openings up to the next stepped size. That wouldn't feed a lawn mower.
I may try that filter idea if I can get one in 3/8".
You never know what the PO did and boy can it be a surprise...and I thought I had seen it all.

It takes all kinds! I'd never have thought of that as a filter location. Interesting.

My friend's truck had 7 fuel filters between the tank and the carb....what'll they think of next?

BTW, when he removed all but one the truck got better mileage and ran like a scalded dog.

That truck forgot what it was like to swallow.Been sippin`for years,I bet.

Dirt can clog fuel lines.Filters prevent this...unless they are the clog!I think dirt would have a hard time getting into that filter

Hey that would be a great ideal to use a filter like that on a teenager car or truck.

Wow. His intentions were good but he didn't know it could be starving the engine.
If one wants to put a limiter on how fast one runs, say for a kid driver all you have to do is install a thin plate under the carb with holes half the size of the carb. It's called a restrictor plate. It does work, look at Nascar. My dad once bought a stock Elcamino that wouldn't run more than 60 mph. The previous owner had a restrictor plate put under the carb for that very reason and it sure worked. A piece of thin sheetmetal is all it is.

How does it run now? Bet it'll beat the 65 mph now.
