I've seen a 2wd converted to 4wd with coils all the way around. I gotta say it looked pretty good and it probably rode pretty nice as well.

The 88 and up trucks still used leafs out back too. The IFS used torsion bars, no coils at all. It wasn't until the GMT800 SUV's came along that GM started using coils in the back. Again that was on the SUV's only and except for the H2 Hummer, 1/2 ton's only. 3/4 ton subs and avalanches came with leafs out back too. Now coils up front on 4wd full size trucks didn't come until the 2007 GMT900 trucks came out with coil-over struts.

Back on subject, coils on 4wd solid axle trucks. People have done it, but it will require a complete 3,4 or 5 link arrangement to locate the axle as the coil would only support the wieght. Leaf springs perform both functions of supporting the wieght and locating the axle. So if you take the leafs away, you got to put something back to position the axle/connect it to the truck.

Changing over to coils is not an easy operation and requires you know some stuff on suspension design. Until ORD comes public with their coil-over 4 link conversion, nobody sells a bolt on kit to ditch the leafs on a solid axle gm truck.

If you want an example of what it takes to link up a solid axle trucks, there was a thread in the suspesion section of this site that did just that. He linked up the front and rear of a 70 or 71 K10 so he could run airbags front and rear. He wasn't putting bags on to drop it, just to give a really soft ride and give some adjustment up and with loads. Took a lot of fab work to link it up. I'd post the link, but couldn't find it with the search function here...
