Need recommendations for 71 C10
I just purchased a 71 C10 350/350. I need to replace the water pump and starter and have already replaced the battery. I'm going to change the thermostat and oil at the same time. The air filter looks new but I think I will replace it also. While doing the water pump I'm going to look at the timing cover to see if it is leaking and repair if necessary. Do you guys have any suggestions as to anything else I should look at while I have the front of the motor off?
Thanks, Todd |

You have to drop the front of the pan an inch or so to replace the seals on the timing cover. It is a pain.
The original 350 came with plastic tooth timing chain sprockets. I has lost at least one in a real bad place to try and fix it. If I was going to take the timing cover off, I would at least look really hard at the timming chain and maybe replace it with a real-steel-deal. Belts and alternator? Might think about having the radiator rodded out. They seem to like that about every 5 years, but it isn't so cheap. Fuel pumps seem to last forever. My truck has a fuel filter that is right near the fuel pump. It would be easy to change with the front off. Scrub's talking about the oil pan. Since you have to drop it, you could consider just taking it off and checking inside it for pieces of metal. I'd probably leave the oil pan and timing cover alone unless you have oil leaks. If you decide to remove anyways, it would be a good time to replace the crankshaft seal in the timing cover.
