Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
What is the correct name for the three speed trannies that came in the 67-72 trucks. My truck is a 69 the originally had a straight 6.
does anyone know the size of the final drive gear? |

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
Three speed on the column is the correct name for it I believe.
I am curious of the rear gear ratio also. I have been told 3.73:1 and I have been told 4.11:1 but I don't have a tach in the truck so I can't figure it. My truck is a '72 2wd I6 w/column shift 3 speed Long fleet w/ no options other than leaves out back and the gauge package. Any ideas on the factory gear ratio? |

My truck was born a 71 with the standard L6 and 3 on the column too, the stock rear end came with 3.73's in this truck. Someone will chime in I am sure with more accurate info. Also, call it what you want but I always refered to the 3 speed on the column as '3 on the tree' too. It probably is suppose to be standard on the column or something like that.

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
What do you mean by final drive?
If you are wondering about 3rd (high) gear on the 3 speed. It is a 1:1 ratio.

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
3.73 i believe were STANDARD on all manual transmission pickups, blazer, burbs. auto's should have been 3.08 or 3.54 depending on 1/2 3/4 1 ton. hope this helps

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
If they had manuals..all my 2wds with 350/TH350s had 3.07s or 3.08s unless they had been ordered otherwise. All my 4wds with 4spds had 3.73s on 1/2 tons...

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
I guess 3 on the tree works. The owners manual says something like conventional H-pattern column shift.
Rear drive ratio seemed to vary with engine and transmission. This is what GM offered in 1970 1/2 tons: http://www.wkinsler.com/truck/index.htm#Power, other years may vary.

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
Maybe i should have been alittle clearer. I meant to ask for the manufacturers name and part numbers associated with it.
i thought they were saginaws but i was not sure, i have never heard them called anything but 3 on the tree. thanks notherngmc that is what i was asking for. long stroy short i am trying to have a carb tuned to the truck and need to know, or at least act like i know, what i am talking about. thanks all. |

Re: Correct name for a "3 on the tree"
When you say 3spd that means 3 on the tree to me.I guess column shift 3spd or column shift manual. It`s becoming obvious why we the people dubbed the "3 on the tree" term.Seems to work best.
