Rack and pinion time??
I have a 69 suburban. I used to be a dealer for Turner Enterprises. (What happened to Bill is a mystery to me) anyway, I have his droped crossmember, upper and lower control arms. My project sat untouched for about three years. I'm finally back into it, and have gotten to the point of installing steering and then brakes.
Turner told me I could still run my stock steering. I trial fitted the steering and it doesn't even come close. The tie rod hits the lower control arm bolts and bushings. He sent me a "tie rod flip kit" consisting of the parts in my hand in the pic. They don't really help. What steering rack would I use to make this work? how hard is it to weld one to the crossmember? I know I would have to notch the frame to clear the tie rod ends. Thanks in advance for any help or insight!

Re: Rack and pinion time??
I would think a mustange or pinto rack is going to be your best bet. thats what most kits use depending on if its power or not. I would do a search on the portorbuilt drop crossmeber its a rack steerinf style i think and look at pic of how it is set up on it.

Re: Rack and pinion time??
I used a mustang 2 rack, but I made my own crossmember. Mounting it is very easy, it just takes 2 through bolts.
Rack is from Ebay, and was around $120 shipped Last edited by PrerunnerRob; 11-09-2007 at 10:42 AM. |

Re: Rack and pinion time??
Thanks for the help PrerunnerRob. So just bolting it to the front of the crossmember should be strong enough? I guess I could weld a threaded bung to the front of the crossmember. Do you have any pictures of how you did yours? That would be a gigantic help. Next question is power or manual. I would love to do manual to clean things up, but the wife may drive it occasionally.
