Power Brake Conversion - Please Don't Flame Me...
This is my 1st post, please don't flame me....
I have a 1968 LWB 2WD 1/2 ton truck and have just completed a 6 cyl to 8 cyl conversion and a 3spd to auto conversion. I am in the process of changing over to front disc brakes from drums and have bought the front end parts off of a 1971 2WD 1/2 ton C-10. The booster/master cylinder on the 71has a rod coming out of it with the mounting bracket attached to it. My existing manual brake master cylinder is connected to the thrust rod that is conected to my brake pedal. When I remove my manual brake master cylinder, the thrust rod is left hanging out of the firewall. It doesn't appear that the trust rod that is on the 1971 will fit through the firewall and connect to the brake pedal. Do I need to get another thrust rod?? Or something else... I have read on this site that 71 parts don't match those on a 68. Then I have talked to some folks that say the 71 will fit right onto the 68 brake pedal. I'm confused. Please lend me a little of your professional advice. |

I had a 67 that I did the disc conversion on and it was an easy bolt on for the master cylinder. I used the stock hole. the rubber snubber might have been replaced making it a sight seal. the 71's rod should just bolt right into the stock hole one the brake peddle.

Welcome to the board from West Michigan!
The booster/MC as mentioned should bolt up. The 71 rod from that goes to the brake pedal is a two piece adjustable rod. Do you have both pieces? Jim

Thanks for the welcome JimKshortstep4X4. I'm not sure if I have all of the right parts? Let me describe it the best I can without a picture. I have a 1971 master cylinder that is bolted up to the vacuum booster. On the backside of the vacuum booster there is a rod coming out of the center that is about 5 inches long. There is a bracket attached to the booster that has 4holes that attach to the firewall to the existing 4 studs. There is also a long mounting bracket that attaches to the firewall below and to the right of the master cylinder. The pushrod that is in the center of the booster has a hole in it on the end closest to the firewall that looks like it connects (with some type of pin that I don't have) to a two piece bracket that kind of sandwiches the rod in place.
The problem is that the pushrod, if connected to the bracket like it needs to be, does not extend past the mounting bracket. Therefore, if I mount the vacuum booster, master cylinder combo using the mounting bracket onto the existing 4 studs on my firewall, there will be NO pushrod entering the firewall to connect up to my brake pedal. There must be someone on the forum that has owned a 1968 and put a 1971 power brake conversion on it. Help........ |

First off, welcome. There have been many people who have done this conversion. They have used all types of brake boosters, etc. It sounds like you are missing the part that threads onto the end of the rod. Here are a couple of pics so you can see what your looking for. This is actually off of a '67, but they all interchange. Hope these pics help some. Shawn

I bought all of the parts as a disc brake conversion package. I did not see it being taken off of the 1971 truck. It looks like the guy probably just pulled the pin on the linkage at the brake booster and left the rod hanging without removing it from the brake pedal. After looking at your pictures (thanks) I see that I am missing the following items: 1) The two piece adjustable rod that attaches to the pedal 2) Both of the connecting pins to attach the rods to the booster bracket 3) Both of the clips that hold the connecting pins to the bracket I'm in the S.F.
